Ok so I recently upgraded my cpu from a 2.23 ghz core 2 duo to a 2.8 T9600 core 2 duo. I had problems when first installing the CPU,which I found to be related to overheating and since have fixed those issues. The computer was performing great for a few days, then, yesterday it started randomly shutting down on me. I've had it happen no matter what the task. The screen will just go black and then the computer will shut off. When I restart, it doesn't even say it shut down improperly either. I am not sure what it could be so any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Josh

if it shuts down from heat it will do that, when I push the x9100 too far that is what I get. Monitor your temps to see if this is the issue.

A cpu under volted can do this too................

Yeah just a second ago I had my temp monitor and it was posting nothing about 85 celsius so I don't think that's the issue with it. If undervoltage is the only other option, how would I got about fixing that?

nothing above 85 on the core or TSZx, also you have to mod hwmonitor to 105c from the 100c it is set at default or it reads the temps wrong. 85C core could easily be 95C or more TSZx and if the mod isn't there you are probably really over 100C on TSZx and that is a shut down just waiting to happen..............

Ok I'll check that setting and post what temps are. The only reason I find it strange is because it was working just fine for like 4 days (while watching videos and playing games) but then it just crashes one day.

Yep I double checked and I had set it when I downloaded it (guy who recommended it told me to do that, didn't really know why it was pertinent)

so is 85c the core or TSZx?

Edit; also did you AS5 the nothbridge or reuse the heatpad?

That core temp is WAY too high for idle. My x9100 at 3.7 GHz idle is now 37-39c.........

Did you apply the thermal paste correctly?

Yeah I just redid the paste job because it seemed like there wasn't enough. I think the problem is stemming from the fact that the fan linked to the heat sink is no longer running. It doesn't seem like I disconnected anything; it's possible it just burned out?

So I didn't get a chance to open it up and check why the fan isn't working but on the plus side redoing the paste brought down my idling core temp to 40c

Alright, disassembled the computer and found out that the fan connector had been jostled loose somehow. Reconnected it and I'm idling around 30c now so I'd say problem is fixed so thanks to you guys for the help
