(***Edit 11 march 2008: see below)
(***Edit 16 july 2008: see below)

I have done the following upgrades:
    - the screen has been upgraded to 1680x1050
    - cpu has been upgraded to T7300 2.0Ghz

    Result:
I expected more of the screen upgrade. Somehow the 1680x1050 screen looked better on the original notebook (MSI MS-1719).
Cpu upgrade to 2.0GHz got me ~500 more 3dmarks (69xx to 74xx). Overall the cpu performance is also better, e.g. when displaying a lot of folder thumbnails.
Overall Im happy with this upgrade and Im going to keep it this way. Warranty on both notebooks voided obviously.

    Screen upgrade
The screens of the Gateway p6831fx and the MSI MS-1719 are physically identical (inverter plug, mountingbracket holes, etc). Both are something like LG LP171xxx (I forgot to take notes!!). Its written at the front, left top corner.
So it was basicly a swap.

Here are some pics of the new screen at angles where the original screen would be all washed out and such:

This is a printscreen at the 1680x1050 resolution. Looks better than the original. Though I expected a bit more.

Washed out black colors are gone for good.

Almost straight on top of the notebook. Somehow my picture quality is not very good. Anyway, all icons on desktop are readable without a doubt.

Another notorious angle which would hurt the original screen. (Hm.. next time i'll shoot at 1600x1200).

    Cpu upgrade
On both notebooks the installation of the cpu is very easy, almost the same procedure. Screws 1-4 for MSI and 1-5 for Gateway, etc.
3dmark06 score went up with ~500 points.

    Edit 11 march 2008

Here is the model number of the screen I'm using. Thanks to all for suggesting to use everest for screen info :)

    Edit 16 july 2008
The question "where can i buy a screen thats fits?" still comes up regularly. I'll make a list then, where everyone is welcome to contribute:

    http://www.lcdsuper.com
    Thanks goes to Tom1222.

I see a screen on this website that will most probably fit, because it's for the GATEWAY P-171X FX:

Nice work, it confirms what I was planning to do with my screen, but now I'm stuck at WSXGA vs WUXGA. Since I started leaning towards a blu-ray drive, I'm starting to lean towards the 1920x1200 resolution.

Your panel is likely the LP171W02, which was the one I was thinking of installing.

i must have lucked out on my 6831 and got the samsung screen instead of the LG one which is what i think i saw the first time i saw the NB on display at bestbuy and it was atrocious but this sammy is pretty damn nice and bright as well.

Same here, I have no complaints about brightness, dark blacks, light bleeding, etc with mine, I'm just looking for higher resolution. I have the Samsung Panel as well.

    M3lvn,

Is there any way you get check in Everest for the exact screen you have transplanted to your 6831? Or if you have the serial number for the 1719. I have a place that can order me a replacement screen, but there are 2 different part numbers. They said they would know if they had a serial number from the 1719. I appreciate your help if possible.

    Thanks,

    Chris

Yeap, I just ran everest and it says my monitor display is a samsung. Mine looks perfect if you view it straight on, but at some larger horizontal angles, the black gets washed out. Other than that the other colors remain intact for the most part.

    M3LV,

    That is really awesome.

Do you think you could write a how-to guide for replacing the screen? I am planning on doing the upgrade and would really appreciate a step by step guide.

Also, how much did you pay for your screen?

    Thanks,
    K

Is there any room to get a touchscreen on it? (Including the controller and whatnot)

Probly wishful thinking, and pretty costly for such a big touchscreen. It's more of a hypothetical question.

    ---

By the way, I just checked my P-6831FX's monitor with Everest; it's also a Samsung screen.

    Hi!
    I thinking about upgrading to a T7700 (2,4Ghz, 4mb cache)...how much 3DMark06 point would be that? Would it be above 8000? (with T5450 I'm getting around 7000)
With T5450 my GPU is around 68 celsius after few hours of gaming...how much would be the GPU and CPU temp after hours of gaming with T7700??

How much are the CPU benchmark point(3dmark06) differences between T7700 and T9300 and T8300?

    Thanks man.

Its to much work now to loose everthing again, so I'll just give some tips ;)

    I followed these guides:
    http://www.notebookforums.com/thread212385.html
    http://www.screentekinc.com/lcd-removal-instructions_en,compaq.shtml

The creditcard technique didnt work for me at all. Thats where the screentec guide comes in handy:
    step4 : removing bezel

The bezel can be tough at some points, as if it is screwed or glued to something. I just squeezed in my fingers gently untill it popped.

Also, I found it better to loose the whole bracket with the screen from the lid first. And after that you can easily loosen the 4 screws at either side that attach the screen to the bracket.

I didnt order the screen separately; I swapped it with my MS1719.

Temps should be very similar if not exactly the same as what you have now and i would guess you would get about 8k in 3d6 maybe a tad more. the t9300 gets like 8800 in 3dmark6 with out any overclocking .

But T9300 is not much faster then T7700, isn't it? (max with 100-200 points I think)

I installed a T7500 . I play COD4 a LOT .. My CPU tops out around 69c after hours of playing .. I use HWMonitor to monitor my temps ..

    My 3dMark06 score is 8291 ..I'm using gateways video drives and I don't O/C ..
    Hope this helps ..

But 3DMark is an overall poor indicator of CPU performance. Get the T9300 - the extra cache is worth it..

In the case of the new screen I think we know we can use the LP171W02 screen as an upgrade. My question is, there are different suffixes to this. Do you use an A3, A4? Do both suffixes work? Is there any way to know this for sure?

Great thread. I'd really like to change out the LCD that came with my P-6831FX (Samsung).

Any more info on other LCDs we can swap in? I'd like to go for at 1920x1200 display.

I can confirm that the A4 model works in the P-6860FX as I just swapped it out from my dead Sager NP9860. At the native resolution of 1680x1050 text looks more crisp, and so it's just as readable even though its smaller than on the stock screen. The screen is slightly dimmer than stock, but viewing angles are better (especially the vertical). With the stock screen, if your even slightly off angle in the vertical, images on screen will appear washed out due to excessive light leakage -- this is not a problem with the LP171W02.

The hardest part of the replacement processes was removing the tape that holds the connector to the screen in place without damaging the connector, but it wasn't too difficult. Overall I'm very happy with the result, and couldn't be more pleased thus far with my purchase.

    John, and anyone else?

I'm a notebook modding noob, I admit it.

Can you tell me more about this screen? I have a 6831fx coming on thursday along with a t9300 processor and I defininitly want a screen that has better resolution and viewing angles than the stock screen.

    Thanks

There is another thread out there that shows all the screens that will work with this computer. I decided to stick with the screen it has for now. It really is a pretty good screen and I don't need any tighter resolution.
