well i have been reading this post a while ago, since december i think when i entered the mobile computer world.
i should first say that, this is an amazing forum, really you have done a great job here.
now my problem is that i followed all your instructions for installing xp on the 7811, but i stuck with the audio problem, im using SP2 if it helps and none of the post that i have read here, helped me solve the problem.
PS: im using an ubuntu xp dualboot if anyone needs help just pm me
thank you very much

Have you gone to other manufactures forums to see if they have similar sound fix with win xp? A lot of the times they will use the same sound card in different laptops. Wont hurt to try other forums. Lastly, what build are you using for ubuntu? I am using Xubuntu with Karmic Koala.
-
well im using now ubuntu 9.04 jaunty jackalop. about the laptop sound card i think it is the same that the gateway p7811, i bought from amazon, i dont think they changed it.
by the way isnt the karmic koala the beta version? you must be really experienced on linux using, is it a good build? -

You will have to use Devcon to restart the Microsoft UAA Bus Driver For High Definition Audio.
When it restarts the first time, you'll get the prompt for 1. Conexant Audio 2. NVIDIA Audio (HDMI) 3. Modem
You only need to install the drivers once, however Devcon will need to run on startup to restart the device so you have sound every time you start your laptop.

after all this reading i made my mind on uninstalling xp and using vista 64 bits.
but thanks anyway for everything.
now about the vista installation, i read that there is a OS partition on my HDD,
so i was wondering is there any way of using that partition for reinstalling vista?
thanks -
I just really like nixs. I have been using Xubuntu for about 7 months solid. Well minus playing around with W7. Yeah karmic koala (9.10) is still in beta but the packages are more up to date. I love how powermizer is so easy to disable and raid is to setup and customize. I can lock my cpu at a 100% also. Try just doing a partial upgrade to Karmic. Where you just download recent packages.
-
well i actually prefer sticking up with stable version, i didnt really like jaunty jackalop when i first tried it, it was on its final version but i found it to buggy for a normal user, now its okay i do get some crazy errors like the wifi manager dissapearing but i solved it installing 3rd party software unlike xp where you are stuck with their ty manager.
by the way i think that you could close this thread, i solved the audio problem.
thanks to rancid and to all of you for helping. -

In XP you can use Intels Wifi manager, along with hundreds of other 3rd party wifi utilities. You are definitely not stuck with the Wireless Zero Configuration.
In XP powermizer is very simply to disable also, click Disable in the Nvidia Control Panel and click apply.
I lock my CPU at 100% using rmclock when Im gaming, if I'm not gaming I have it locked at 800MHz for lower heat/lower power consumption/longer battery life.
Haven't setup a raid yet although it seems that these laptops were made for it. -
i will try that thanks, also i was reading about the p7801 and i saw that you could add a second HDD, but what special type of HDD do i need?
thanks again for all this help -
and by the way aglobal, did you find any noticeable improve in gaming performance by changing the cpu? do you think is worth it?
thanks again -

It runs smoother and games open faster. I have my T9900 locked to 3 GHz when I play games, so there is an improvement.
You just need a regular 2.5" drive, you can use a SSD or HDD. You have many options, you can get 2 of the same drives and raid them, or use one for the operating system and one for storage.
The CPU in mine wasn't really worth the money, the SSD was the biggest upgrade I ever did, and locking the OS into RAM with EWF made it even better, everything is ridiculously instant, and I never see the loading cursor ever. When I first changed the CPU I saw no difference at all, since everything was instant even before I upgraded the CPU. It wasnt until I undervolted it and started locking it to 3 GHz that I noticed some big programs do open a few seconds quicker and load faster. I don't really stress my laptop very much, but I'm sure if you're running very CPU intensive programs you will definitely notice a difference. -
thats sound interesting, if you dont mind could you explain me how to locks the OS to ram and a little explanation? appreciated.
i was looking at some hard drive but they are little bit expensive, i will wait for prices to lower i havent used all my space yet anyways.
also, do you use hacked driver for your gpu? -

I use Dox 182.46 video driver.
EWF makes all the writes made to the C: (I have it on my C: ) drive go into RAM. This means that when you shut down the computer, all the changes (All the writes) are discarded. Your computer is the same, every time you turn it on. You can save on demand, although the proper method is recommended so you don't save unnecessary writes. At least 2 partitions is recommended, this is a very advanced setup, I do not recommend this for the average user.
If you think hard drives are expensive, solid state drives are way out of your budget -
yes it seemed pretty advanced configuration.
about the budget, i realized that i confused the HDD, becuase im reading on amazon right now and you are right, they arent expensive, for 80$ the 320gb, i dont know why i read yesterday that they where at 300$, i think i confused it with the ssd.
sorry to bother you but do you think i could use a non sata HDD?
i was also thinking at this product
http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digit...2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1247179778&sr=8-2
i think it should work with the laptop,
by the way for the price of a ssd you buy a p7811 y dont think its really worth it unless you need super fast speeds. -

Nope our laptops use the SATA interface, you have to (And want to) use SATA drives.
The Scorpio blacks are very popular with our P78** laptops, word of mouth is they run hotter than other comparable 2.5" HDDs. However, I have not personally used one of those exact drives, so someone else will have to chime in with their experience with it, or you can find more info by searching.
Most people require more storage. When you compare SSDs to HDDs, SSDs are much more expensive per GB than regular HDDs. They offer uncomparable speeds and an access time of .1 ms, although if you need a large amount of internal storage, they aren't an option until the price comes down enough to justify buying a large capacity SSD.

This is probably not the LOWEST price you can find online, but it is an average so you can compare:
$78 320GB 7200 RPM Scorpio Black HDD
$730 250GB OCZ Vertex SSD
Also note the cache size of the Vertex, 64MB of cache is included on ALL the Vertex drives, even the 30GB and 60GB, which state 32MB on most websites. If you purchase a Vertex or ask OCZ, they will tell you and you will see that ALL Vertex drives come with 64MB of cache. This is another big improvement over the HDDs 16MB of cache. -
it seems pretty fast, but i wouldnt use it for gaming, although its better deal than any other laptop on the market.
if you dont mind the question, but what use do you give the ssd? -
AGlobalThreatsK Notebook Evangelist
The P7801 is a great gaming laptop. I love mine so much it replaced my desktop.
Currently I have an OCZ Vertex 30GB installed in my P7801. I was doing lots of testing between the Vertex and the PatriotV2, and was very surprised when the PatriotV2 showed better results or equal results in all the real-world tests I put them through (Boot up time, program starting time, copying/pasting, atto benchmarks, etc.). However it is a fact that the Vertex has a faster controller, more cache, and does indeed have better read/write speeds when written directly to the drive. So I used sanitary erase on the Vertex to clear all the wear off the drive that I put on it when I was testing, and started fresh with a new install. It seems slightly faster now, and I am most likely going to use the PatriotV2 in a different computer, and keep the slightly faster Vertex in my P7801. I have the drive split in 3 partitions, XP is on C: with 490MB used, and E: holds my games+programs. I have the leftover 13 GB unallocated, since the SSD will use that space anyways. Since I don't need the space, it's best left unallocated. C: is locked with EWF, E: is not.
Ill setup a Raid0 with 2 SSDs eventually, I don't know if I'll see any improvements though. It's just like when I upgraded the processor, if everything is already instant, it cannot get MORE instant. -
well good luck with that one.
