Do not put a thin TIM on then chipset. Many, including myself, have successfully used ICD on the chipset. This TIM, unlike most is extremely thick and well suited for this application...........

Microcenter might have some, but you are better off from ordering them online like FrozenCPU

The gap didn't seem all that big to me when I opened my 7805u up. You really don't want too much thermal paste. Just a nice thin even layer to whatever surface you're applying it to. Enough so you can't see through it. You can buy artic silver at radio shack. So if you don't want to buy it online. ;)

You have to remember that "large gap" is a relative term... and in computers the chipset has a large gap. AS5 is a great thermal goop, but it is very thin so has a good chance to "run out". Thats why there is a thermal pad on it, ICD turns a bit "waxy" and will actually fill the gap with out running

I've never tried ICD. Artic Silver has worked well for me thus far. I'll have to keep ICD in mind next time I open my laptop up and give it a try.

This is most likely the updates that windows is applying. You may have a setting set that allows windows to automatically update. It will download them when you are online and then when you reboot or turn on again later, it will apply them. It may take a few minutes. ;) DON"T TURN OFF YOUR LAPPY WHEN ITS DOING THIS. Just let it do its thing and let it boot up. I don't know if you may have compromised the update by turning it off and on 50 times in a row but I guess you'll have to wait and see.

It shouldn't happen EVERY time you turn on your computer. If it does, then it is something else. Good luck.

ICD is different from other thermal compounds which had to be put on as thinly as possible. ICD is a good conductor of heat so it can be put on thick. Check how big the gap is between the top of the chip and the heatsink and put in enough to fill that gap. ICD is non-conductive so it doesn't really matter if you get too much oozing out, but it will look messy if that happens.

I would recommend starting a separate thread with your question, kingcobra.

It is somewhat burried in a thermal compound topic.

It is rare fr them to be getting static, it isn't that rare for them to have been zapped one time and now ruined. sometimes only one gets bit so trying what I suggested one stick at a time in both slots may yeild you a bootable machine without the bios beeps.

If you are getting a supply of static that was keeping you from booting new memory will do nothing to stop the problem as the static will be there with the new sticks. Overclocking the FSB or using a program that plays with the memory's SPD has also killed more than one or two memory sticks too........
