Randomly a couple of days ago my computer would start LOCKING up whenever I have a mouse plugged in. I thought it was my crappy 5 year old mouse. So I went out a got a new one. What do you know? It makes it crash too. I have a USB fan. Now it makes games crash too. It is freaking strange considering a week prior everything was FINE. No problems what so freaking ever. Both mouse and USB fan plugged let me play my games no problem. Now it makes my games crash.

The games work fine if neither things are plugged in.

I have also updated my ICH9 USB drivers.

And I have rolled back as far as I could to see if it would fix the problem.

    I have updated my BIOS.

I don't know what else there is left to do.
This is really weird. I can understand if I got this system with this problem but it randomly developed weeks after having it.

Has anybody else found a fix? I Search for this in the forums, found one thread. There was no solution in there for it. Just a bunch of theories.

If it's any relevance I am running Windows Vista Home Premium x64

I thank you for your help in advance.

May be you have shortcut on some USB cable or you may overload the maximum Ampers for notebook's USB power capacity. Look for a active powered external USB hub. Then it would solve your problem...

Good thought, but two things dont make sense. How come a little crappy Five Year old Microsoft mouse is too much for a 2008 Laptop and how come it worked prior to.

    Anyone else?

Why is this thread titled USB Hub?

I'm assuming the laptop is fully charged and you're using the provided Gateway 120W power adapter.

Is your power profile set to high performance? Did you change the USB settings in the power profile or did you change the USB polling frequency (I assume you haven't)?

You can confirm the mouse works fine in other computers, Gateway will most likely want you to reinstall windows to confirm it's not a software issue.

You said the USB fan makes your games crash, does that mean it works when you initially plug it in but then it crashes after some amount of time? What USB fan is it?

I assume this problem occurs with all 3 USB ports, and there is nothing physically wrong with the ports (You didn't break the black plastic piece out).
