i ran 10 hours of dead pixel fixer(6 color image that used to unstick or break in plasma tv) and ran probably 20 hours high resolution, high contrate screen saver and wiped my screen for 3 hours yesterday with microfiber cloth. nothing helped. it looks exactly same.. this is definitely a huge defect right?
my co-worker even told me i am crazy for wiping my screen for 3 hours. my screen is so shiny i can actually see reflection of everything so clearly. better than my mirror.

pay attention to huge white blotch on black screen when viewed from left. it's actually bigger and longer than that. it covers like 1/3 of the screen. and no, it's not camera flash light. also take look at blue light coming out of underneath the monitor. it has this visible half inch of blue line. bam.. i honestly haven't had monitor this bad. i hope it's just defect.
i am taking it back. =(

I'm afraid you wasted your time in running all those tests; the pixels are not the issue. There is clearly something wrong with one of the backlights (if this particular model sports dual backlights); perhaps it has not been properly installed. Either way, your (only) option is to send it in to Gateway as a major product defect.

yes, it 1920x1200 one. i am just afraid if i exchange it at best buy, i might get 1440x900 this time around. i might as well just return it and buy 7801u from newegg.com. i need higher resolution screen cuz my cad program requires minimum 1280x1024 resolution(900 won't cut it). :(

The bottom portion is backlight bleed, it's common on a lot of laptop monitors.

It's kind of crappy, but let me as you a question. How often are you staring at an almost black screen? Then, how often are you staring at an almost all black screen from the far left side?

If you use this as a movie laptop with your family or friends, I could see this being a problem. But if not... I would perhaps consider keeping it. That's just me though.

Backlight bleed occurs at the edges of the screen because the illumination provided by the backlight is not separated from the LCD panel properly. For some reason you have uneven light, not bleeding; it's a different problem that I haven't really seen before.

Right, the first part I was talking about was the bottom section. It happens on my laptop as well, look at it at a certain vertical angle and it gets brighter than the rest of the screen.

As for the actual problem with the blotch, I have no idea what is causing that either. But I bought the same laptop for my father, and I saw the same thing. What I was saying though is that if you actually aren't going to see it often... than it really isn't a huge problem.

i bought it on 01/23/2009 at best buy so i think i will try best buy first.
i am restoring it to factory default as i speaking. i'll probably take it back either tonight or tomorrow. if new one comes with same problem then i will just have to go with different brand. i actually tried to see if any laptop have this problem at micro center yesterday but none of displayed model(even though they weren't same model) had problem this severe.

Yeah see if factory settings don't work then I would honestly return it.
The laptop I'm on had the same issue, whats weird about it is I simply formatted, reinstalled vista 64 and haven't had a problem since.

just restore to factory default. and this white blotch is more noticable than ever with default gateway black background. i can start to see this huge white blotch covering 1/3 of my screen from 10 degree away from left side.
if it's just small i wouldn't mind but my screen almost seem like one of those broadcast testing gray and black lines.
i looked at other brands but i couldn't find anything that has similar spec as this for $1200. i really hope new one i get come with 1920x1200 screen with no blotch problem like this.
sager notebooks are nice but the one i like was $1700 for similar spec. :(

I had similar issue on the 7811 I had for a moment, what helped is a slight pressure on both sides of the panel (lid and screen). Be careful and gentle but for me it fixed the issue untill the next time I used the computer. Check it out.

Also see if swiping the screen with a soft cloth makes any diference. I heard about bubbles of air forming under the cover and causing this sort of discoloration, some people had luck wiping it out.

    Good luck,
    DK

Well, for me- When I gave my laptop to best buy I was also afraid I would get a lower resolution screen back. I had heard it was happening with Gateway a lot.
I asked one of the people there and they said that best buy does all of the repairs.
    -I have the 7811 though-

You should have a better chance getting a 1920-1200 back from best buy then by sending it into gateway in my honest opinion

PS: Best Buy should get it to you faster also.

I see the same White blotch sometimes on my 7811, all i do is get a soft cloth and use pressure from right to left and the white blotch (ghosting) disappears completely. I had another one but had to exchange it since it was a serious issue and i had dead pixels.

But the Ghosting only happens when uneven pressure is done on the back of my LCD screen I just apply pressure and it disappears. no ghosting or anything.

i went to bestbuy and exchanged it.. but second one i've got was 1440x900.
i specifically asked them to open and check and they told me they can't do that. i told them just open up and see shipping date and version so they removed the tape for me. it said 12/16/2008 version 1 so i thought it was same 1920x1200 cuz my first one had 12/14/2008 version 1. so i walked out of the best buy. but heck.. it was 1440x900. i suppose my first one was very last line of 1920x1200. when buying 7805u from best buy check the box. on side if its SNID# is higher than 85072894322, it's 1440x900. so i walked in
best buy and ask them i didn't want it because it was lower resolution.
i told them either give me same one or give my money back. guys at customer service called their manager and they told me they have no more of 7805u in stock and there's nothing they can do. they told me they have to charge 15% open box fee if i were to return it since the laptop itself has no defects on it.
so i told them. "you guys sold me defected one so i came here to exchange it and i am not going to accept lower quality one."
they were keep saying it was the last one in stock and it does exactly what box says. so i called their manager out and told him i am here to exchange to same one and i am not going to accept anything lower and if he's going to charge me for open box fee, he will have to compensate me for wasting my time by selling the defect. after 30 mins of talking, he finally backed down and went in and brought out another 7805u. haha.. this guy.. he was saying he didn't have in stock anymore minute ago. anyway, it was obviously open boxed as it says geek squad tested(optimized) sticker on box with $1049 price tag on it. he told me the one he brought out is 1920x1200 and been optimized by geek squad so it should be more expensive one. whatever, i looked at it and it had perfect screen. no scratches, no dead pixel, no white blotch at all. and outside were super clean too. so i told him i would take that and took that one home. jeeze.. i wasted good 2 hours there at best buy but at least i manage to get another 1920x1200 with no defects.
now that i think of it, i should have asked them to give me another $100 back since the box of the replacement i got says $1049 tag on it and it wasn't real factory sealed brand new. haha.. anyway,
it's all good for me now. except there's about .1 inch long scratch on left click button(only visible under the light) but i guess it can't be helped. ;)

Whoa, I didn't know they started shipping with 1440x900 screens. That sucks!

Glad you got a good laptop though. Don't let Best Buy push you around. ;) It's an unfortunate scenario though because the box DOES say 1440x900. But oh well, you got the laptop you wanted :D

My 7801u has a white blotch like yours, and exactly in the same place.
I can only see it from a side, though, and never from the front. So I won't send it back, I think it's not worth the trouble.

The 7801u I ordered is due to come tomorrow. I won't keep it if there's the white blotch. It's ludicrous to spend over $1k on a computer and accept huge imperfections regardless of how good of a deal it is.

my 7805u has the same issue. and in the same spot. although I cant see it from straight on. I wiped it down and lowered the brightness of the screen and that helped. its not worth loosing my 1920x1200 screen. I'm a photographer and not a big gamer and only reason I got this computer was for photoshop cs4 work. I'll send it in if it gets really bad. or just before the warranty expires. i figure about that time I will be looking for a new laptop anyway.

The problem has nothing to do with the backlight; it's a bubble of air that is trapped between the panel and the screen. You can physically put a bit of pressure on the screen and rub the blotch around. Start from one side and try to work it to the other (use a T-shirt or a towel). My 7811 has the exact same thing, and while it's not a BIG deal it is annoying from angles. Some have reported being able to squeeze the air out of the side of the casing, though that hasn't worked for me: I can rub it out so that I don't see it for awhile, but it always creeps back to the middle.

Really wondering if it's worth it to get it fixed :(

I am wondering if this is more prolific in the LG's or AUO's and if the res matters with this problem. I have a 1920x1200 AUO and fortunately no issues with it.

If you are going to send it in first contact Gateway and have them tell you, by the serial number, what resolution they have you as and document it! then they will have to give you back what you have...............

I've gone through 2 7811 FXs. The first one had the white blotch like yours really bad and applying pressure in different patterns didn't help. My second one has the same issue, however, I was able to apply pressure and remove the white blotch. I'm not too concerned about it. I normally don't stare at black image on my screen.

Well, I just got my 7801u today and sure enough, white blotch. It's clear as day, but since it's a 7801u I don't have a risk of getting a 1440x900 back so I'm sending it in for a replacement.

If they send me another blotch, I'm just going to buy a 1920x1200 LED screen and try to get newegg/gateway to pay for it. It's really a shame, I wanted this laptop badly but all the trouble I've had trying to get it is putting a bad taste in my mouth.

def a defect for sure. there is no fixing that. send it back for sure, no way newegg or gateway is going to pay for a led screen. and there is also a small chance a led will work it uses different plugs usually and does not have the normal inverter.
