I trying to do a clean install of vista, but I want to back up the drivers first on to a disc. I get to the burn phrase of the Recovery control and it fails on me every time. any suggestions?

Make sure you are using the right disk type.

When I was trying to burn to DVD-RW, it would fail. If you don't have regular DVD-R, there is option to make to ISO then using the DVD burning software to burn the ISO to the DVD-RW/R/+R etc.

i am using a dvd-r. I think it was an issue with the optical drive because right after that I was having trouble loading a CD. I did a simple restart and I'm crossing my fingers so I can get all this bloatware off my comp.
