hi im new to this furom thing hehe :p but i bought a gateway 7805u fx laptop like 2 months ago its been playing ok but in the past few days i have been noticing that the processor is hitting 85c temps when playing games like counter-strike source or runescape which is weird because before i could have them both on at the same time and it was at about 65c-70c i live in puerto rico and the enviroment is hot especially my room i dont have a cooler for it but i plan on getting one right now i have it up off the desk about 3-4 inches and the fan facing it since over here not a lot of people have air conditioning at night its idle at about 44c and during the day its idle at 56-62c and when on a load during the night its around 75-80c and during the day 80-91c any help is it gonna damage this cpu??

you are within tolerances but I would keep some compressed air around and blow out the GPU/CPU vents once a week or so. A good thermal paste on the CPU wouldn't hurt either but that coulod void your warenty...............

Try cleaning out the cpu heat sink.

All you have to do is open up the larger panel on the bottom of the lappy.

There should be a large piece of copper running along. Unscrew it. At the end will be a lot of thin pieces of metal, make sure those are dust free.

When I did that a few days ago, my load went from 62 to 44.

thank you guys for the help im still gonna buy a cooler for it but the temp's did drop a little the whole left side of the heatsink was full of dust it was blocking the fan air to go thru and i put it on a load and it only reached 76c on each core :)

Thats still higher than it should be. I play CoD4 and my temps hover around 60C CPU and 78-80 GPU. Make sure you are getting sufficient air to the intake of the fan and it needs to be on a hard, flat surface. A table or the like, not a bed or couch.

i put some thermal paste on today will my temp start decreasing fast or do i have to wait till it settles to see the temps improve?? and can i run the cpu at max load or should i wait a couple days to do that?

the thermal compound used people say its good but im not sure i used this one http://www.xoxide.com/arcticsilver5.html

i use x9100 e0 on my p-7805u and it's 44watts cpu(stock p8400 is mere 25watts). i consider it's hottest cpu you can put in this laptop and it still never go beyond 70c even during the hours of prime95 torture test and it never go beyond 60c when i play games like crysis, fear 2 etc.
if yours run that hot, i think something is seriously wrong with your heatsink or cpu(if thermal compound is applied right). or you are not playing your laptop on carpet, are you?

i live in puerto rico a lot of people over here dont have carpet its not used we use tile floors and the climate is hot we have to be using fans no a.c so i dont know where u live that must be out in the states cause when i lived out in the states i had low temps max on load was 60c when i was out in the states its when came over here that the temps started getting so crazy im gonna wait till i know that the thermal compound is completely settled and starts passing the heat better from the cpu to heatsink i will keep the heatsink clean and im buying a new laptop cooler so the temps should drop

yeah, i live in michigan. it's not so hot right now so i suppose, i have low cpu temperature. it's only 25c when i turn on and idles at 31ish and never go
beyond 37c when i am not playing games. well.. since summer is coming up
pretty soon, temperature might go crazy for mine as well(i hope not)..
if that happens i might have to get that huge antec notebook cooler which
    i don't want to carry around.. =(

yea probably during the summer you will see higher temps most likely just not as horrible as mine lmao when i get cooler they will drop a lot and also when the thermal compound finishes and gets particle to particle which thats when il see my temps drop by 3-12c and also with the cooler that should help drop a couple more c's so yea :)

Well, for comparison. I live in Florida and will idle from 28-30 depending on the time of day. My max never goes beyond 43 now.

    -recently cleaned out my heatsink
    -recentely applied IC Diamond
    -Undervolted
    -NZXT Cryo

Your CPU should be idling around 15-35 and max around 35-50. Those are the temperatures I got when I played Mass Effect and GTA IV.

Here's a screenshot of my current temperatures. I'm playing music, running Firefox with 6 tabs open and playing a movie.

You tend to run a bit high both day and night but at high ambient temps this is somewhat to be expected. ICD 7 or 24 might get you an extra 3c for the CPU.

Your circumstances seem to be about the max for the system. While you can have a fan blowing on the system a cooler, like the zalman, it still the best bet. At least be sure the back is proped up 1/2" or better...........

What bios version do you have? Mine came with 9c.11.00 and I upgraded to 9c.12.00. There was no real change other than the sound card by default did not get recognized. There is a trick to getting it back in.

Now if you have the 9c.17.00 then you have the latest and greatest. At the momnet there is no way to get this version as an upgrade..........

That is the cooler I use, as do many others here as well. Don't expect miracles as this isn't a thermoelectric device, but for ambient cooling it is your best bet...............

if after i apply the new ic diamond and i buy this cooler and i still dont see temps drop well then i will probably send it in for a depot repair to one of the gateway service centers because with all that i dont think this computer should be getting too hot even if i live in a hot enviroment the temps im seeing are just weird today i couldnt even play any games it would undervolt itself too lower the temp of the cpu so hopefully this stuff will lower the temp if not i will send it in.

im probably just gonna send it in for the depot repair i think the heatsink has something wrong with it because i dont feel the heat passing thru the copper only the copper near the processor is hot it stops when the copper gets to the corner like where the fat copper is the heat stops there so the heat isnt even being transfered to the heatsink i think what do u guys think? want me to take a picture and show u where i feel no heat when i touch?

i think its the heatsink because i have a new problem i now cant play any games unless the fan is on and right beside it because as soon as i launch a game the temps go to 60c then start going up all the way till the cpu has to undervolt itself too cool so it has to be the heatsink what do u guys think?
