Didnt the employee tell you "we cant sell these yet?" I know when I tried to buy a psp headset they wouldnt let me because it wasnt registering in the cash, it said that it couldnt be sold until a certain date. Im going through a 2 and a half hour drive for one of these so I would hate to come back empty handed(I doubt its available in canada anyway).

Ah I see what you mean. Perhaps calling the Best Buy you are going to and ask if they can ring it up and sell it?

Yes, I was told they could not sell it untill the "Street Date", 1/4/09, because of a agreement with Gateway. I bet it will be in that Sunday's ad.

Call ahead and ask them to hold it for you. Normally if it is in RSS (our stocking system) then it can be rung up and sold. I'd imagine the person that said the headset couldn't be sold was BSing you.

You may very well be correct, I didn't even think to check the next ad when I was at work the other day. Good point. A minimum ad quantity would cause us to hold them.

It was pretty smooth for me. I just forgot the SKU# so I first had to find a netbook on display that had Wifi... he he (got the magic nuimbers from here...)

Then all I asked if they had it, and how much. And before he could say another word after he handed me the printout of $1049, I said "I'll take it. :)

    OK, an update.

I went to BB in Orange, CT and they do not have the 7805U on their computer system. This is a newer and bigger BB in CT. We looked at the storage bins, nothing.

Then I went to the North Haven store also in CT. Nothing on the computer here either. But the BB employee, a certain Lim, was very knowledgeable and helpful, he volunteered to look at their storage bin and voila. They have 2 7805U at the $1049.99 price plus tax. But since it was not on the computer system, it requires a manager's approval which only comes if I buy the Trendnet antivirus and a printer. I have no need for either the AV nor the printer but I went for it, the Trendnet AV was $39.99 and the printer was $59.99 and the manager's gave a a discount of $20 on the printer. When nobody was looking, the BB Lim told me that I can return the printer and AV later for a refund. The return lines were kind of long anyway so I will go back to BB after the holidays.

I have had several laptops, Dell, HP, Acer etc... but never a Gateway. Hopefully, this will turn out to be a real nice machine.

    @flynnaz,

You are an expert in Gateway, any advice for a Gateway newbie?

Well the first to do is create a gateway driver backup CD, It shows you how in your owners manual, real easy. Next go here http://www.pcdecrapifier.com/ download pcdecrapifier, it will uninstall all the bloatware crap without doing a full reinstall. Next go here http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/drivers for your latest video drivers, look on the forums for the best drivers others are using, I am currently using the dox 180.84 get it here http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=22262 it works great, and has the extra desktop files removed, not needed for a lappy. If you need a great (Free) AV get AVG 8.0 free, works great, lite on system usage, recommended by many computer mags, get it here http://free.avg.com/download?prd=afe . Also for spy-ware try spybot S&D, get it here http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html . And last but not least, games, thats why you bought this bad @#$ lappy, I play Everquest 2, Fallout 3, Cyrsis, COD (all versions), all on high settings. Don't for get to get some kind if stand or cooler to keep you lappy happy :) I use a cheap wire frame stand from Walmart, it cost around $16.00 (rubbermaid), look in the office supply area. Get a good gaming mouse also, I look Logitech, this company stands behind their product, I have had very little problems with many items, when I do, they are more than welling to help with a exchange or replacement. I use the Logitech G5 mouse, I still am not sold on wireless for gaming, I know the G7 is a nice mouse. I use a Logitech G15 Keyboard, feels nice, lots of bells and whistles. I use a 22" LCD monitor also, you get the best for both worlds, desktop performance, and grab and go for lan parties. I know I rambled on and on, but I hope this helps.

Went to Bestbuy and bought one, the screen was not as good as on my refurbished 7811, My coworkers and I all thought the screen seems to have less sharpness and contrast with any image I put on it. I had the resolution and everything set to the same on both systems. It also had WD 320Gb 5400rpm drive, not 7200rpm.

Odd... mine has that Western Digital WD3200BEKT drive.
    http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?DriveID=482

    7200rpm

Also I think the screen is nicer than the TigerDirect referb 7811's. I had them side by side and the color is much better plus it's brighter w/less edge bleeding.

I'm starting to wonder if these new 7805's were supposed to be spec'd differently for the cost and there will end up being different components in these units until quality control at Gateway get's it to the spec's from the box.

Your right it was a 7200rpm, when I looked up the part number it changed the number to WD3200BEVT. There was also a bit of banding on the bottom quarter of the screen and when I looked at device manager it didn't list anything but generic. The only thing I noticed that was different on settings was the 7805u had the option for 59hertz my 7811 has only 60, but I am still using the stock nvidia drivers that came with the 7800.

Congrats to all on the new laptop. It's amazing how cheap it is and the lucky ways in which you got it before the street sell date.
Be sure to keep us updated on your systems in the appropriate Gateway thread.

Try to find a noob/newbie looking employee and get them to check inventory. And make sure to keep talking to them and make a story about how your friend bought one from a neighboring bestbuy. And so they get distracted and they won't look at the ADDITIONAL DETAIL part of the Inventory.

This is how I got it to work at the 2nd best buy, at the 1st best buy I was rejected, cause I was all quiet IMO while they looked it up.

    Hey guys,

I also saw the ad for the 7805u for $1049 but I had one HUGE question before I go out and buy it for colllege...

    1. How high do the temperatures go?

I do not want a gaming system with temps over 70 or 80 C... Please respond quickly, I know the sale is probably not going to stay for long... Just like I missed out on the Asus laptop..

with the laptop raised slightly at the back, temps will hardly go above 70 during intense gaming. otherwise, keeping it flat, i do notice temps a little higher.
    gpu idles at 38-42.

Ok, I have installed this driver now, seems to be working good so far, Thanks!
P.S. Does it matter which 3 choices I choose on the driver(I belive it was Standard, Quality, or Performance)? Is there really a major difference between them? Thanks for your help :)

I always pick Quality, I am not into benchmarking, just playing games, all of which look great.
