they say it's better, but if one drive crashes then your whole system is lost.

Raid 0 is a huge boost, because double the drive speeds, but if it crashes, as john says, it is a huge loss as half the data is on one drive, the other half on the other drive. I like Raid 1, which copies from drive 1 to drive 2. Any of the raid options will increase heat, as both will be under load when the laptop is in use, for the most part. You may want to partition your first drive for your os and programs, and use the second for the pagefile and data backup/document storage, won't solve your heat issue since the pagefile is being constantly written to, but certainly safer than r0.

Raid 1 is NOT a backup solution! Although the chance of data loss due to drive failure is reduced, data loss due to viruses or user errors, e.g. overwriting a file or deleting it, is not. If a file is deleted or overwritten the RAID array cannot be used to retrieve it. The file is gone. When a file is deleted it is deleted from all the drives. When a file is overwritten it is overwritten on all the drives. This is why a RAID array is not a backup solution.
Stick with Raid 0 and double your capacity along with a slight performance increase. Then just male backups to DVD of your important files. Much better way of doing things.
