ive loved my lappy for almost a yr now but finally want to upgrade cpu. the new 7811fx seems like a viable replacement but only if i could sell my 6831. would upgrading the cpu to a t9300 give this old lappy a new freshness or should i sell and get the 7811, opinions? vynle

Stick with the 6831. Not worth the upgrade, especially with all the problems reported on here. Just upgrade the CPU and RAM in your 6831. If you want to dramatically increase the speed of your laptop for not a lot of money the guys over at OCZ forums have just discovered how to fix the stuttering problems with the OCZ Core SSDs and they can be found for silly cheap.

imo not worth it. better stuff is coming you have a great system and will not see much from the 7811 over what you have.

Honestly until Nehelem is released for laptops, theres not much of a point in upgrading.
The 7811 is nice, but its really not much of an upgrade to the 68xx series.
Shiney new tech always seems nice, but I usually wait for the "Tick" of intels cycles (due to completely new tech instead of just baby step upgrades) -
Just so you know though Nehalem for mobile (Clarksfield/Westmere) isn't expected until Q4 2009.

yep, and honestly i don't see anything mind blowing coming out until then. Just slight upgrades to already existent stuff. Nothing to write home about.
But the end of 2009 beginning of 2010 brings up Nehelem mobile quads, win7, even better SSD's, and another 1 to 2 generations of SLI/crossfire which should be in the FX level of gaming rig pretty easily by then.
So... all in all a pretty big deal. Until then its pretty much repackaging of the same old stuff with slight upgrades -
Westmere is native six core - can't wait

me too. I want nehelem so bad i can taste it. I'm actually going to have to hold my wallet though. Because i'm also looking at the Sandy bridge stuff and its pretty freaking impressive too.
But i have to resist and wait until the 2012/2013 ultimate die shrink (the wall we'll run into with conventional computers where we cant actually shink them any further and 16+ non linear cores)
ah the future... so much cool stuff and we have to wait so long for it -
i have read some recent reports that say it will be a lot sooner than that fyi..

Im working on a Nehalem rig right now, my 6831 is in the process of being sold.
I will let all you know how fast it is -

I cant wait for the mobile stuff to come out, i hate waiting for cool shiney new tech that i want. -

CPU: i7 920(@ 2.66Ghz)
MB: MSI Platinum X58 Board, LGA 1366
RAM: 3X1GB DDR3 1066, Corsair
HDD: 500GB Seagate Momentus
Case: Coolermaster RC-133, $58
and this works out to about $900 CAD
and the guy I might be selling my laptop to might give me a 4850, and an ANTEC 650W PS if I give him my laptop for $900.
Im going to use my TV for now as a monitor, and then Im hoping to get a 22inch acer for xmas, so then it will be complete -

sweet, sounds like its coming together.
Wish you luck with the GPU/PSU -
the thing thats really throwing in a wrench is the stupid MB, they are all performance boards, and the cheapest one is $270 CAD, if this was in the states it would be so much more convenient.
PS SORRY FOR HI JACKING ITS KAMINS FAULT -

Hey, we answered the question, hi-jacking is normal at this point
