My opinion is to keep using the P-7805u. It was one of the best deals ever, when it first came out, and it should still play most everything you throw at it.

I still use mine for video editing, bookkeeping, spreadsheets, database stuff, word processing, etc.

So unless you REALLY need a new computer for high end gaming or faster high def video editing, just keep it and use it.

My advice is go with transferable upgrades.

An SSD should be at the top of that list, followed closely thereafter by 8GB of DDR1333.

Don't upgrade the CPU - it's throwing money into a dead platform.

That part is wrong. The CPU is the bottleneck of the Gateway FX series. Hard drive would be the second bottleneck. No game has a required recommended setting of 8GB of ram.

Even at stock settings, the Gateway FX series (7811fx and later) can run every game (with the exceptions of CPU intensive games like Shogun 2) at max at 1440x900.

    @OP

Is there a reason you want to upgrade? If you think that $500 worth of upgrades is not worth it, then I suggest investing in a desktop rather than wasting money on a mobile platform that becomes irrelevant in 2 years max. You can easily build a desktop for $1200 that can play games at 1920x1200 at max settings and even get a 5.1 surround system and 21''+ LCD monitor. Most importantly, the desktop is very open to upgrades years down the line, which makes it future proof.

An SSD will make it "feel" faster and can be unquestionably carried to another computer, whether laptop or desktop.

    The RAM, less so.

Re-read my post. I said focus on *transferable* upgrades - not spend money on (at this point) a guaranteed used CPU from someone on eBay with a potentially nebulous usage history. I never said upgrading the CPU wouldn't speed things up, just that right now it's really not worth it in my opinion.

you have to look at the intended expected additional life that would be provided. If the GPU will last you out say another 12 months then it might be worth trowing $500 or so at it when a new system that you think would last 2 years before need of replacement would cost you at least $1,200 or better.

Now if your upgrade pattern is every 3 years you may not want to invest more than $250 to make the upgrade worth while rather than just a break even option.

You have to take into consideration other factors. Such as if you have a 1920x1200 screen as then it makes more sence to pour more money into the system is that resolution is important.

It is hard to judge for each person what is best without knowing what is most important and even then we all here could easily be wrong. So it becomes a personal choice, the bird in the hand or looking for two in the bush...........................

I actually have this problem too. I already installed an SSHD (Momentus XT) a while back and the crysis series is the only program thats killing my pc (i cant run on max settings, or even near it). The only thing I was debating to upgrade was the RAM, but I'm not sure if upgrading the stock 2x2gb ram to 2x4gb will help much w/ crysis (mainly playing crysis2 hon and sc2 but only crysis2 lags and im not sure if its the CPU or RAM)

8GB ram made no real major difference here. What resolution and settings can you run?

    A 7811 has a 512 MG 9800mGTS??????????????????????????? If that's so then that's a major factor in the gaming department.

This is the first computer I've kept more than 18 months. Even before I upgraded CPU, RAM, and added a SSD the computer did very good by me, more so now. I am an IT Pro and do a lot of virtualization and software development in addition to gaming and general PC stuff. This has been a great machine that has saved me $ in the long haul.

1280 x 768 with minor lag spikes, any higher settings and i experience even more lag spikes, usually when the area around me is surrounded w/ action and fights and stealthed ppl running around
v-sync off, would turning it on help?
high settings, i think its the lowest option lol, the other two settings are very high and extreme

im actually thinking its more of a CPU problem.. but its rather hard finding 7811 users playing crysis2

if the CPU or GPU needs an upgrade, i rather go out and buy a semi-used asus g73 then upping this 7811's C/GPU cuz its almost 3 years now since I've had it, glad i came back to this forum lol I at least have an idea what this rig is lacking

edit: 800x600 when i use the notebooks monitor (only res i can play w/o lag), 1280x768 when i connect it to my 25in' through HDMI, thought that was an interesting find, anyone know why?

whats interesting is, my benchmark scores seem to be higher then the current m11x's, is the benchmark scores universal or is it company/system based? (was debating on g73 or m11x since i have an gaming keyboard and a 25in to connect it to, then i can disconnect it and bring the 11in' to class)

yeah, if i get the g73, i'll have to do what im doing w/ the 7811, if i get the m11x, i can bring it to class instead of my sisters 4 y/o hp, i connect my 7811 to a monitor and keyboard when i go back home

The original poster (OP) posted about a p-7805u. Why is this thread digressing to a discussion about P-7811?
