It fits my price range.

Yes, if you like 17" screen its the best bang-for-the buck with 9800M GTS, 4GB DD3 and Centrino 2 all for under 1500
-
Come on now. This thread is just silly. I'm not trying to flame, but you're asking members, in a Gateway subforum, chock full of 7811fx threads, if you should by a laptop that's not only $1500 but has the performance of laptops costing twice as much? What do you think were gonna tell you?
-
no...you "should" not buy it.
You "must" buy it. -
Dook:
Hehehe - that's like going to a Ford dealer, and asking if you should buy a Ford.
Pillow1313: If it's in your price range, and 17" is up your alley, there's not another laptop on the planet in it's class for price/performance! C2D, 4G RAM, 9800M GTS... come on - there's nothing CLOSE!
If I could handle a 17", I woulda' stretched the budget and gotten one.
Just too big for me.

don't buy this, there is a comparable alienware at 5000$....
-
the only thing i disliked about this notebook is the heat and also the fan noise. For me this was my first notebook so i have no idea what other notebooks are like. But fan noise just goes on and off even while surfing or just even having it on. im kinda getting used to it. but overall i think this notebook delivers performance with a fantastic price
-
thats the price of having a high end gpu, it needs to be cooled, there is no way around it.

Not trying to start anything, but until they're all out of stock everywhere, the P-6860FX is still a viable alternative, especially if you can get it for $1250 or less. I knew the 7811 was coming out and what the specs were when I bought my 6860, but I chose to go with the older model anyway. First off I got it for $200 less, then it had a lower resolution which I actually prefer. A lot of people really like the higher res on the 7811, but it was a little bit hard on my eyes when I went and checked that res out on another machine. The 7811 is the faster machine overall, but if you want to save a little money the 6860 can still be a nice option if any are available in your area...
-
I love mine, its not perfect but **** for the money it does alot very well and the layout seems to make upgrades very easy if you want to down the road. If the previous model is near as nice I do not think you would be unhappy with either model.
-
trying to get a comparable laptop from other brands is as people have said twice as much. although it may not fit all of my needs. I was just wanting to know if it as decent as it seems to be or if there is some big flaw.

It's not built like a tank and it does have quite a bit of flex around the palmrests and speakers/media buttons. The screen is also prone to flex but none of which is a real deal breaker for me. Honestly if you want to see how the flex compares to other brand go to bestbuy and press on the display model a little bit. push on the back of the screen, the palm rests. if it's not in a big metal doohicky open the CD drive etc. and then do the same with some comparable notebooks.
I don't really like the wireless on and off switch in the front. It feels a bit cheap and considering i can tun the wifi on using Fn+ F2 i find it a bit dumb to have it there at this point.
The battery sticks out about an inch from the notebook.
The orange and black color scheme is a bit ugly in my personal opinion. Not to forgetthe back of the screen design being just as bad.
Three USB ports makes good sense, but it can be a bit limiting for me personally. (keyboard, tablet, mouse, external harddrives, flash drives etc.) I don't think everyone will have that problem but then again that is what a USB hub is for.
The media keys up at the top seem to work well with windows mediacenter, but i don't use MC and will probably never use those keys to be honest.
the notebook can be a bit loud as the fan pushes out lots of hot air, and the hard drive spins quite fast. Nothing that would bother you in a normal environment but late at night when all is quiet it can be a bit annoying.
also The CD tray requires some care as it feels a bit flimsy when trying to insert a DVD or CD onto the spindle.
All of that is pretty minor in my opinion but you might feel otherwise. -
The battery life is also terrible.
-
how compatible would it be with leopard and if you pay apple a couple hundred and get some permit you can instal leopard on non apple machines

1:48 minutes should get you through most movies, and give you ample time to find an outlet. But battery life is in the eye of the beholder. However for those who want long battery life, i'd hope they're not dumb enough to be looking at 17in gaming notebooks in the first place. -

I thought running Leopard on anything other than a MAC was a EULA violation?
(I could be wrong.. if things have changed...) -
It is a violation of the EULA, but a common practice among some communities. The Montevina platform is currently unsupported by OS X and this laptop would be more trouble than its worth hacking kexts to work properly.
-
i saw a site reporting the p-68xx run osx easily only no sound through the speakers / headphones / line out.
they went the usb way successfully.
as said above with the new chipset you are inviting one big and long headache. -
most of the downsides to this laptop walk hand in hand with other 17inch laptops, battery life, size, heat and noise, etc. I will admit the build quality is sub-par, but the components are top notch and depending on wether you get a samsung screen or not, you could have an awesome screen as well.
-
its legal if you pay apple and become apart of their "test" or engineering team or something like that

Steve jobs called few minutes ago.
