i only had my lappy for less than 2 weeks...and on week 2 i started getting this hissing noise on my adapter. i know this is a issue with a lot of people on here and some of you guys who chatted with a gateway support got their replacement ac adapter.
so last friday i chatted with gateway and instead of them sending me a replacement ADAPTER they sent me a replacement CORD (WTF?) which i received just yesterday.and unfortunately, problem still unresolved. the adapted hissed worse than ever.
so currently, im chatting with a gateway rep and hes telling me to either send it in for repair or just return it to bestbuy for exchange (which i do not want to do since im almost sure most of the 6860 are having this problem). will see what happens.![]()
dont get me wrong i love every part of this laptop. plays everything on high settings that i throw at it. and built quality exceeded my expectations considering this is a "budget" gaming laptop (thought they would cut corners on some part). : (

dang that sucks man.
talk to another rep and see what he tells you -
go to to BB and ask for a new adapter, wouldn't they prefer changing an adapter over a laptop ?
-
If it still hasn't been 14days you can do a quick swap of the adapter; that is what I did recently for mine. Though mine burned-out it didn't hiss; or anything before doing so.
-
If you return will they charge you a restocking fee?
-
Sometimes you can talk them out of the restocking fee. It just depends on what kinda mood the CS girl is in.

well decided not to return lappy to bestbuy. talked to a gateway rep this morning and theyre sending me a replacement adapter.
been looking around the forum and most of the people that got replacements didnt really get the problem solved. and one of them found out that the hissing sound is normal due to the heavy use of adapter supplying the lappy (hope hes right!). -

Yeah the biggest problem is i think the adapter is "slightly" less powerful than it needs to be to run the machine.
mine sounds like a bunch of little baby birds chirping away when its plugged in. But its never really been a problem.
But if they are giving away free adapter that might be a good deal to get one. I'm pretty sure all of the dapters are going to make some noise. We have a pretty large power block (though as i said i think its slightly to small for the FX series)
I hope it all works out for you -
Is this adapter problem something that develops or does it start right away?
-
I believe it's something that's just there because it's being used as the max voltage possible. It's not that bad, I don't actually notice it at all and probably never would have if I didn't read the forum because my adapter is all the way on the floor.
-
Mine has been running for the past two days, 24/7, and it barely get's past warm as far as it's temp is concerned. I don't hear anything coming from it either.
-
both the adapters i have dont make any noise what so ever or im going deaf in my (older) age
but i have a fan on the floor in my room and beefy desktop sucking up alot of other ambient noise so if it ever did make noise i probably wouldnt notice it anyhow . i have put my ear to it more then a couple times though i cant couldnt hear anything out of the ordinary . the adapter noise thing though has been a major complaint from alot of people since day1 of these machines so it has to be a very real problem but i guess its just all luck of the draw when getting a new adapter .
-
mine is as quiet as a dead mouse, bit warmer though.
-
LOL. Great analogy.
sigh....i THINK im returning my 6860 to bestbuy
