I recently made a post asking if anyone had any regrets about thier purchase of the 7811 as I was buying one for my brother.I recieved a lot of helpful advice and I did in fact get him one,he loves it,the only problems he has had was trying to get some of his older games like gothic 3 to play, other then that all is good and btw he did get the 2888 serial number.
My new question is for myself as I have been researching like a madman to get a new laptop for my buisness and it seems when you compare the 17" laptops today that the 7811 gives you the best bang for the buck.Does anyone know if I will be able to run my quick books software without any issues . I am not much of a gamer however I will be using this for some 3d rendering programs.
again thankyou for all the helpful advice,I have learned more about laptops in the last two months then I could of imagined...

If you do not game then why would you consider the P7811 which because of its video card uses a lot of power and emits a lot of heat.

Save your money and buy something which will run cooler and will do all your applications, i.e. Quickbook with no problem. Although almost ANY newer laptop will do this.

Yes it will run quickbooks no problem at all but like husky I have to ask, why a 7811 if you are not a gamer? There are MANY other choices out there that will cost less, run cooler and likely have more features that you might be interested in. Check out the Dell Studio series. If not for the 7811 I would have bought a studio 17.

thank you for the advice, I have considered a lesser laptop without the video card, as I stated though I will also be using this for 3d rendering programs so I assumed I would be better off with a good video card

    For 3d, yes you will.

My main note would actually be that 17 inches is not very portable. If you lug this thing around, you're not just dating, you're married with children.

I'm also considering buying this laptop, although I am not much of a PC gamer. I just do a ton of multi-tasking work. I'll have videos, lots of browsers, IM programs, and more running at once and want something that will be able to handle that multi-tasking without any slowdown even 2 years from now. I'd also like the HDMI and VGA ports for the option of dual monitors and using my HDTV as a monitor. I also need a better resolution than 1200x800 which doesn't give me enough workspace. I'm not too concerned about the size of the laptop, as I'll probably only be using it in different parts of my house and rarely take it out. So is there really a laptop that's a better deal than this with all the features I listed and will still be fast at multi-tasking 2 years from now? If so, please show me it.

If you're not using it to game, you will still want a decent graphics card, but probably not one as great as the 7811's. What you WILL want for quickbooks, etc, is a laptop with a good processor. The 7811 will do fine, but if possible, you should try to find a laptop with a lesser video card and a better processor, as this would be more balanced for your needs and could probably be around the same price.

Heh sorry to get off topic... but I read it, and your brother couldn't get older games like Gothic 3 to work? (First of all, that game is less than 2 years old, I would think you would mean old as in Doom or something  ), but what was wrong with it? I haven't had a 7811FX, but I had a desktop before with an 7600GT and 4 gigs of ram in Vistax64, and it ran fine for me...

Maybe I should load it up again on this laptop.

Where could I find a laptop like that? And what processor would you recommend?

thanks for the advice I really appreciate it. As far as my brother and gothic 3 I will have to ask him the specifics but if I remember correctly he said it loaded fine but when he tryies to play it it keeps asking for the disc to be inserted even though it is...

i did because of the 1920 resolution, as well as a decent processor/memory.. comes in handy when running multiple vmware virtual machines...

and it just doesn't run that hot when not gaming.

without knowing everything he needs out of a laptop, it's poor practice to just assume what you think will work for him, and poor advice to just tell him to "save money", especially when the 7811 is actually quite a decent value.

also, you might consider it's possilbe that while he didn't purchase the laptop for gaming specifically, he might actually want to play an occasional game on it....

while certainly not the most... 'portable' unit, at a bit over 9lbs i have no problem.. throwing it in my backpack and lugging it around is really no worse than doing it with my 15" laptop... just need the right carrier =)

much better reasoning.. do you have an example of a possible alternative that would have better cpu and support 1920 res at a better pricepoint?

I haven't bought a PC game in many years, and can't see myself buying a new PC game any time soon The only PC games I have played in recent years are not very advanced at all. I will mainly use it for a lot of multitasking, working, watching videos, and listening to music.

I'd also like to see an example of a laptop with with a better CPU, high resolution, and price. Is there any?

I have been doing some searching and I did find a laptop with a Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 2.50GHz, 400 GB hard drive, 4GB RAM, a Blu-Ray burner, Bluetooth, NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT, and a 17 inch monitor with 1920x1200 resolution. And it's a little cheaper than the Gateway. Only problem is that it's refurbished. But it sounds like a really good deal otherwise. This is the link:

My primary reasons for chosing the 7811 was the 1920x1200 resolution, the DDR3 (not very common in laptops with 17" WUXGA screens) and the ability to upgrade the processor (if I don't mind getting my hands dirty). Secondary reasons were the fact that it came with the 32-bit version of Vista on disk, and that folks on this forum had done a pretty thurough job of figuring out how to install XP.

My other options were the Toshiba Qosmio which, I discovered when I went to BB, had ony a 1440x900 screen and not the higher resolution I found on the Toshiba website (Toshiba has corrected this), and Lenovo Y730. After several months of nagging the Lenovo folks for a Y730 with 1920x1200 resolution with no luck. I purchased the 7811. Two days later, Lenovo plops a WUXGA Y730 on their website for $1600. It has weaker video (ATI Radeon 3650 256MB), and a larger but slower 320GB HD. It also has bluetooth and a BlueRay option. And Lenovo actually puts out XP drivers for its laptops.

    I'll stay with the 7811FX.

That Sony is OOS now. But the AR is going to be replaced in November anyway. Did you look at the Sony FW?

The Gateway 7811 is a very good machine if you get a newer one.
