My trusty Alienware died and I'm looking for a replacement. It's a tossup between a 15" MacBook Pro and a Gateway P-7805.

I'm impressed by the features that Gateway offers now and Apple, well--it's Apple. I've owned Gateways in the past and have never been dissapointed. So my question is, is it still a good quality notbook? How do you think the P series compares to the MacBook Pro?

    Thanks.

personally at this point i would go with the 7807u rather then the 7805u unless you find a good deal on the 7805u. its a very good laptop still and the vid card is still up there among the best. considering all high end laptop gpus are restricted to 16 rops even going from the 9800m gts to a 280m gtx isnt really going to make that much of a difference in terms of fps vs price. the p8400 is not the fastest but it can get er done. i can play 1080p video with the p8400 just fine (with out the help of the gpu). so although its not a t9900 or similar it can do just about anything the average user would want.i myself have never been a fan of apple because they overprice their hardware in my opinion.

if you go for a gateway i would recommend you get another hdd and run it in a raid array not because of a fault or ssomething like that but just because of how much faster it made it go :D

You get more for less with the gateway, makes sense to me!

For games the macbook has maybe half the power of this notebook.

Trust me and go with the gateway P-7805u

I was in the same dilemma a week ago.

I went with the P-7805u and it just arrived yesterday, compared with my friend's Macbookpro, I won't deny that the design of MBP is so much better, lighter and smaller.
But talking about price and performace.. P-7805u is the way to go.

Or if you're not opposed to buying used, 7811's go for cheap (mine was 800$ US) and have the amazing 1920x1200 screen guranteed.

Although pretty much any 78xx FX will be amazing.

If you don't mind spending more, or have a bigger budget, then you might like an Apple. Otherwise.....Gateway!!!! :D

I'm selling my stock p-6860fx for $500 if your interested in getting a inexpensive yet powerful notebook.

Selling laptops goes in the marketplace, not the individual subforums. You're new so i'm just giving you a heads up.

I would never say Macbook. If you're going to spend that much, why not just get an Alienware or Sager. And if you do go with an FX, I agree with ryokowashu, get the 7807. Although I don't know much about it's cooling. I'm guessing it's the same as the 7805's. Someone said you might want a used 7811. If you're going to upgrade the CPU or overclock the GPU, there's a high chance you'll run into problems, so be wary about that one.
