Ok I might be the only one but I hit fn+f1 and it turns off all the lights buuut.......the harddrive activity led. Is this normal? or better yet does anyone else have this strange occurrence?

OMG your laptop is going to explode... i'm pretty sure i read that in the owners manual
No its prefectly normal... i dont know any way (short of severing the wire to the light) to turn off the HD light.
I guess Gateway wanted to let us still know the hard drives are working. -
Does anyone know how to turn off the lights permanently (so they won't turn on after rebooting the laptop) instead of using fn+f1 every time the laptop boots up?

Yeah, black electrical tape.
Seriously though you could try disconnecting one of the ribbon cables which goes to the media bar. There are two and as long as you don't disconnect the power button. Wireless, numlock, capslock, HD, power lights may be a tad more tricky.
