I bought it and the screen is rather bland to me. Has anyone successfully upgraded their lcd? If i could upgrade to a nicer screen then this would be the perfect notebook to me.
-
its easy to do and this is a very nice screen if you decide you wanna upgrade.

thats a nice screen and comes highly recommended i had one similar in my 6860 and thats the model johnkss has in his 6860 currently and also says its very nice.
i like my screen alot but maybe i just got lucky .
Also have you gone into the nvidia control panel and adjusted digital vibrance yet ? it really brings your screen to life .
oh and glad to see you finally caved and bought it -
I know the lcd i have now is the B170UW01 or AUO1088.. I wonder if I got the inverter for it could I put in the B170UW02 dual lamp screen. Has anyone else tried ? Will the duallamp inverter fit?
And I have messed with DV already but only really enhances the colors. Theres still the grainy effect on white backgrounds but id like to try and get the B170UW02 working in this if possible. -
i asked this a long time ago and I heard that if you got the inverter it would work
unless it actually does not fit. Aparently the thickness of a dual lamp screen is bigger so it might not actually fit in the lcd lid.
the auo screen thats in the asus g2 is pretty awesome definitely.
I would count on it decreasing battery life too though. -
Never hurts to try if you have the cash to burn.
-
The problems I forsee would be the inverter not fitting in the case and/or the plug coming from the motherboard to the inverter not fitting correctly. Or I guess the safest route would be to find the brightest single lamp screen. Do you guys know the luminance/nits of the B170UW01 AU1088 or even the rest of the specs of this screen?
-
just hope they dont send you a lp171wu1 tl a5 they suck compared to the a2 or a3 models.. trust me ive had all three
-
-
so the a2 doesn't have horrible light distribution? The AUO screen has kinda crappy light distribution too it seems, maybe not exactly like the LG but sorta like looking at a rear projection tv.

Zfactor is the go to guy when it comes to screens and i was going to suggest to PM him but i was getting ready to pass out last night cause it was to late
.
He has dealt with smartmicro quite abit so he could probably be the best guy to contact as far as trying to squeeze that dual lamp screen in you machine as well. -
I am pretty happy with my screen so far...Just a little bit of white light on the bottom of the screen on a black background...
-
im very happy with mine as well . Are there better screens out there for this machine ? sure but for what i paid for the whole package i couldnt be happier.
TBH i were to upgrade my screen i would probably throw a WSXGA screen in it as i like to game at native resolution and at 30 percent less pixels you can get quite a big framerate boost . -
-
the a5 i have now for my dell is one of the worst screens i have ever seen and all 6 i tried were the same exact way. so i can for sure say that while lg does 150% make the brightest ccfl laptop display they do have other shortcomings, the a5 model has WAY oversaturated colors and excessive banding between colors and HORRIBLE HORRIBLE backlight distribution... i can post a pic if you want to see what i mean -
please do. thanks

that is what i have had now from 6 lg panels straight from dell brand new. all at least that bad some worse than others. according to my friend lg panels are fr sure not the best panels anymore he said they get WAY more lg's back with dead pixels and other issues than any other brand he sells -
Wow thats pretty bad..
I can be sure dual lamp wont work cause I just took apart my 7811 and have this CMO N170C3-L01 dual lamp and its a little too thick. Also the cable from the mobo to the inverter is not the same connection. So it looks like I gotta stick with a 1 CCFL lcd. Now I just gotta find the best and brightest one. Uniform lighting, no graininess, glossy etc.. Around 260-300 nits would be good.
I know CMO makes good LCDs, know of any good ones that would work?
Also which is better the LP171WU 3(TL)(A3) or LP171WU 1(TL)(A2)?
Maybe I should get a 1680x1050 screen instead.. so many questions lol -
all LCD's have some backlight bleeding, just fyi . . . ., even desktop monitor LCD's do, backlight bleeding is something nobody's figured out how to completely eliminate yet as far as LCD screens go.
The screen looks only slightly grainy when it's on my desktop
in games themselves, it looks ultra sharp, when i'm watching movies and the like
uber sharp. -
yes but not all lcd's look like the pic i posted its literally that bad check out my pic in the link above and tell me how bad that is..
malignant what is the model number of the oem screen i can cross that with some other brands for you if possible. lmk... i LOVE my chi mei screen on my compal and ive seen a lot of them and most are very nice. unless you go lg or had a led lit screen the start you will NOT find a 260-300nit screen not gonna happen. lg is the only choice then...230ish is about as high as the others go.. -
i have digital vibrance at 50%, brightness at 65.
-
-
I really want the brightest WSXGA screen i can find but it looks like if thats the case it will be this one then ?
http://www.smartmicrousa.com/LP171WE3_TLA3_LCD_SCREEN.aspx -
100% lg is the brightest.
let me call him on that auo.. ill see what i can find out for you. if bright is your main concern lg is the only choice. but ill find out if he has other options for you -
Bummer about the dead pixels and uneven lighting on the LGs the one i put into my 6860 was beautiful but it had a stuck blue pixel that was so bright it drove me Bananas .
-
Too bad there isn't an LED-lit 17" WSXGA or WUSXGA screen yet. Of course, they'd cost a fortune if there were.
-
Actually there is and it does cost a fortune.. around $700 on ebay
Its an LG LP171WU5
300 nits WUSXGA 17" LED backlit screen.. 8-bit (16.7mil colors) and 100% color saturation -
I'll take a good CMO or LG or whatever as long as it doesn't have the grainy/weird lighting issue.. my 1-2 yr old compaq v2000 has a better looking display
Do you know anything about the LG LP171WU 4 ? -
-
i have quite a few screens myself (9 to be exact (17"-42"). and most of them show some sort of bleed when you look at them from one angle or another
this is my lg.
-
he said he will see what he can find compatable wise tomm. he has to check on it
-
ok thanks.. i wouldn't mind lower resolution either like 1680x1050
upgrading 7811fx screen
