well, the time has come i think... as zap brannigan would say in futurama "im feeling the captains itch" (to which his first mate replies "i'll get the powder sir") but anecdotes that not everyone understands aside, im feeling that its time to upgrade to vista, the main reason being that i want the new version of media center, because, living in a college dorm, and having to be in class a lot, it would be nice to have DVR functionality with the smooth interface of Media Center. i have a TV tuner USB stick, and it comes with its own recording and watching program, but it sucks. so i tried using Media center (this laptop comes built with XP media center 2005 edition) however, i soon discovered that this tuner only works with vista media center, and it just so happens that the school i attend (indiana university) has a deal with microsoft, and sitting in my room is a 25 dollar fully 100% legit copy of Vista Ultimate. however, as is im sure the case with many users here, my computer is very "personalized" i have plenty of programs on here, none of which i want to loose, and some of which im not sure will run on vista, now i know that vista ultimate can be upgraded to in a manner where you dont loose any files or programs, but does that really work? and if all my programs stay, will they still function once im on vista? so thats my question, i want to upgrade to vista without loosing any of my programs i currently have, and i also need those programs to function the same, specifically:
Nero 6
DVD shrink (for making copys of DVDs)
Command and conquer Generals
Cyberlink Power DVD
Tunebite (for converting protected music files)
additonally, i recently backed up all the files on my computer to a hard drive, will i be able to use this backup file to bring files to vista in case somthing goes wrong?
finally my computers specs:
gateway laptop MX6956 15.4 inch
1 gig ram
centrino duo processor
currently XP media center edition
160 gig HD
dvd burner
intel GMA 950 integrated graphics
the vista upgrade advisor says i meet the requirements to upgrade to ultimate, so should i? will i loose any files, will the ones that stay still work?
thanks.

Your computer meets the requirements, but it will be much slower in Vista. Also, your graphics card wouldn't support Vista Ultimate's Aero interface, making for a choppy and slow OS on that computer, and a bad computing experience.
Also, you would have to save all of your files to an external hard drive, and then reload them, and also get the vista drivers.
upgrading my MX6966 to Vista (HELP PLEASE)
