when following the instruction for installing drivers, i have a few questions. i want to install the 169.09 driver so i went to laptopvideo2go.com and downloaded the only option i saw which was 169.09 INF. once on my computer i clicked extract files and it put like 138 icons on my desktop. is the file i downloaded contain the .exe file and the modified inf file which would mean i did not have to extract the files? what did i do wrong, i was following the instructions of chaz from the sticky about installing video drivers?

Next time, download stuff from internet into different folders like "C:\download\nvidia\169.09". From there, you can delete the specific ini file and replace it with modified ini file.

If you aren't familiar with all these, just go to Microsoft Update and download your video driver there. There is only one there, old tho.

I download the Inf. to the desktop, then make a new folder "169.09" and place the new driver in the folder and extract it. Next I open the new folder to view the driver files and simply drag the Inf. file off the desktop into the new folder, a message something like"the folder nv.disp. already exits" appears, click the option to replace old file with the new one, now your new driver is ready to go. Now go to device manager click display adapters, click on 8800gts, click on driver and click uninstall, after uninstall completes and the computer is restarted, reopen your new driver folder and find the file called setup it is the one with the blue box with arrows in it, click it and your new diver will install. If any warning message pops up select install anyways. Restart and check device manager to make sure the new driver installed. You can find drivers and Inf. files here http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/

Here's an interesting note. I to am having difficulties getting the newest of the new drivers to install after a fresh install of Vista. I will post a lengthy and detailed telling of my experience that may hopefully help others out. In the mean time the very good walkthrough on LV2G shows the standard VGA adaptor with dreaded yellow explanation point indicating problem status.

After my 1st attempt of a fresh install the standard VGA adaptor is not in problem status but quite happy with it. Windows updates show an updated version for the 8800M GTS but I initially do not install them. I follow to a tee the instructions on LV2G and it comes back saying it doesn't like these drivers and errors out. Not with an error message per say, just a message that nothings been done. Setup program also bails out saying the system has NOT been modified.

So when Vista looks at the location you 'force' it to look at maybe because the standard VGA apator is 'happy' in Vista it thinks it knows better than you.
I was able to get, with the 'have disk method', the 169.09 version installed. No 17x.xx versions though.

My current plan is to take meticulous notes on my 2nd attempt at freshly installing Vista, do windows updates, get the 8800M GTS to show properly in the device manager, and then do the snowsurfer instructions (uninstall, reboot, reinstall with have disk) and see what happens.

the 6831 is my first laptop (worth mentioning anyway) that I've owned so I really want this to be tweaked to the max before tearing through some awesome games.
