The review is a 171Xl the one on gateway.com is the "updated" version, the 173xl. The processor is not as good, and you loose the Blu-Ray but you get more hard drive and its $1000 cheaper. The 171Xl is getting harder and harder to find, thus the reason I recommended the 6831 or the 6860 with the upgrade options. Or just get the 173XL and call it a day. Nobody really uses the HD-DVD drive and there's honestly not much difference between the T8300 and the extreme. Even less with the T9300

    P171XL comes with HD-DVD, not Blu-Ray.

Do yourself a favor and forget Gateway.

Go spend your 20 grand on something else.

This, of course, is opinion most likely driven by other bandwagon opinions and not based on any form of fact or explanation.

No that's not a bandwagon opinion if you take a look at this:

if you read all his threads you will see why dtwn83 is saying that.

no hes right on the dot. if you are gunna spend that much on a notebook, why get gateway? there are better options that high end. I dont have anything against gateways, but they just arent the type where you spend 2k+ on.

As you can see, you've gotten excellent explanations for my earlier post. I've got better things to do than troll.

The Gateway models are excellent budget buys, but once you get to around $2,000 and beyond, there are better options available.

Well, I think it's possible. Based on your calculations, if he had maxed out the number of hours working, it would have been more likely.

Full time summer job @ 5 days a week, 8 hours daily (no OT) = 40 hours a week.
That would be 400 hours per summer, assuming 10 weeks instead of the 8 you used. (Shouldn't summer holidays be longer than 8 weeks?)
Part time work for 3 days a week after school at 3 hours a day = 9 hours per week. 30 weeks a year = 270 hours
Winter hours = 5 * 7 hrs (Shorter hours possibly due to weather?) = 35 hrs per week = 70 hours for winter.

I left 10 weeks of school term free, including spring break and thanksgiving.

    Total hours per year = 400 + 270 + 70 = 740 hours

@ $15 per hour, that nets him $11,100 in a year.
@ $10 per hour, that nets him $7,400 in a year.
@ $7 per hour, that nets him $5,180 in a year.

While it appears highly unlikely that he has $20,000 purely from his own efforts, I would say it's possible.

As for taxes, it's likely that his parents claimed him as a dependent for taxes, and he would get taxed on the remaining amount over the standard deductible.

More importantly, as long as he's happy, I guess it's his choice.

Oh no, I wasn't mad at you. Just pointing out that the others already explained. I figured you didn't know about him, plus I wanted to save other users time.

More digression: I was in NYC for 2 weeks till the July 4th celebrations were over.

I didn't forget, which is why I included the part about being claimed as a dependent for taxes.

You are legal to work at 14 years of age for most jobs. You do get more limited hours though. More precisely, however, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) sets 14 as the minimum age for most non-agricultural work. However, at any age, youth may deliver newspapers; perform in radio, television, movie, or theatrical productions; work in businesses owned by their parents (except in mining, manufacturing or hazardous jobs); and perform babysitting or perform minor chores around a private home. Also, at any age, youth may be employed as homeworkers to gather evergreens and make evergreen wreaths. However, this is a federal statue. State law may have a higher minimum age before one can work.

That's why you get child actors. HEY I KNOW! Maybe he's a child actor! Or maybe he works on a farm.

Nope, from what I've read, he only worked in the summer/winter break; also, I believe he worked in stores like wal-mart or something, nothing special. I don't know about the others but the summer break of my high school was only 8 weeks.

Damned. There goes my child actor theory.

In that case, it would seem highly implausible that he made the whole amount himself.
