Hello all iam very upset right now and freaking out.
I purchased a t-8300 on ebay and received it today. When i put it in it just turns on and stays black and turns off in 7 seconds. I reinstalled it like a couple of times and put my old cpu in and it works fine. I lost a screw in the process and a spring which i have no clue where it goes. Is the cpu faulty?

oh yes definitely, I assumed you already had the latest bios. Yes, update the bios to the latest and then try!

Maybe, but you should definitely update it their is a large chance it could be the problem. If you dont update it you cannot deem the new CPU defective..

true but i cant figure how to do it because i keep getting a memory management problem and it says you need to do it from a dos bootable media and cant figure out that

So what kind of error are you getting? Can you tell us what is says if anything? Did you mess with the bios besides updating it?

    If needed here:

    http://www.memtest.org/#philo

Run this. Also make try and reset bios to default.

Here is some overkill info for you.

T8300 and T5550 are the same family so BIOS shouldn't make a difference. What you are describing sounds to me like the system can't find any instructions (no CPU to give them) and shuts down after a short time.
It's worth testing your memory, but I don't think either are the problem... sounds to me like bad CPU based on what we've heard.

no you cant update the bios because of vista 64 bit thats the real problem. with the newest bios you have to update it through any form of windows has to be thru a bootable dos media

also if the screen is going black after a few seconds it could be overheating...make sure you check to make sure everything is seated properly and that you used some type of thermal compound when you installed it.

you never see the bios screen or anything so i cant see how it overheats
i thought that i put new thermal paste it has the same as my other cpu

only takes a few seconds for it to overheat...still probably a bad cpu like the others said.

If he's pasted it the same as the other CPU and the other CPU works, it's probably not overheating.

It's going to vary on lots of factors - how level the heatsink is, the TDP of the CPU, ambient temperature, airflow, size of heatsink, load on CPU...
but yes, you can generally get at least a few minutes out of a CPU with no paste (but still a heatsink) before the system will automatically shut itself down for safety. Now... if the heatsink wasn't touching at all, 7 seconds sounds about right to me.

well, i've seen them shut down pretty quick with no thermal, but laptops are different than desktops (which is what i work on for the most part) and those will shut off in a few seconds without a cpu fan spinning. Anyways quality control is pretty much out the window the last few years, lots of junk being sold out there.

You should still try the BIOS update, it can't hurt. You need to make either a DOS CD, Floppy, or USB stick.
What I usually do is plug in a USB Floppy, right click in my computer and select make bootable DOS disk. Then I copy everything from that to a USB flash drive, as well as the flash tools (should be one .exe and one .bio [or something similar]. You boot, hit F10, F12, ESC, or whatever your "select bootup device" key is. Select the flash drive, then type the name of that .exe. The rest should be easy. If you can't remember the name of the .exe, just type "dir" and it will list all the files.

what kind of screw and spring did you lose, maybe it is cpu overheating. the cpu heat spreader is not fully coming in contact with the heat pipe. its just another idea since no one else mentioned it. its happened to me in my HP one time, but most likely is sounds like bad cpu.
