XP would be faster and you'd have more resources left for games/apps..

You can always make a dual boot system if you decide you want both.

Vista just has better memory management, so it loads things up pre-emptively. Memory is useless unless it's being used, I wish Vista used MORE memory. It's not Vista itself that's using 1GB, it's loading up other commonly used applications so they open more quickly when you need them. If the memory is needed for something else, it dumps that. Zero performance hit, great improvement though on load times of large applications, assuming you commonly use them. Right now I've got Steam, Firefox, and Songbird open and I'm using 1.75GB/6GB. If I wanted to load up Left 4 Dead, it would be open in 1 second because of this feature.
You won't be able to get all 4GB of memory with XP, and as for those third party DX10 patches for XP - they're primarily rumor at this point, and suspected even if they won't in test situations, they probably will not work in most real-world applications, or will take a great performance hit in their use.
That system will be able to spread its wings best with a 64 bit operating system, my choice would be Vista X64 if the system is for gaming.

This wouldn't work on your pc?

Problems with XP? Are you kidding? Comparing problems from xp 32 bit to vista 64 bit? And you think Vista 64 would have LESS problems!? If that is so you obviously do not deal with both operating systems on a daily basis.

If you want Vista 64 for DX10 and "more ram so it can spread its wings" just install both like I said and use the Vista 64-bit for whatever requires DX10.

Comparing the speed of the 2 operating systems and thinking vista is faster is crazy. Prefetch on, or prefetch off, same with superfetch, an xp 32 installation with simple performance tweaks will be faster than any hardcore barebones tweaked to hell vista os, provided the hardware is the same.

Vista will die off in a bit after 7 is released anyways.

Well i deal with vista x64 and xp 32 bit everday and I;d choose vista each and every time...that is, if the hardware can support it (ram). 4gbs of ram makes my x64 vista tick like clockwork and i have no hardware or driver problems.

I hate UAC, and the fact that you have to have a MUCH better PC to run Vista, but frankly with a FAST PC it really is better aside from UAC (and I feel UAC disabling is too "kludge" in some instances since you have to disable the security center notifications etc to really make it go away). All of my PCs are more than fast enough to run Vista, so they all have at least a copy on them, but when it comes down to raw performance in a straight line XP is still faster. Vista has some great features (that have finally matured) like prefetch/superfetch/readydrive/etc but they mostly improve application launch, not application performance. I also find the disk thrashing to load up all the superfetch info for 5 minutes after I start the PC to be a bit annoying, but it is by design not accident.

uhhh for vista i have all the drivers and have never had a problem with any of them even the 64bit.

The xp drivers i cant even find, and when i do they dont even install.

as far as games go been seeing all reviews all the os are pretty much the same, give or take a fps or 2, not to mention crysis murders xp with vista.

i gave xp a try twice both times can't get drivers to work, horrible!!! It wouldnt even recognize my video card!!! barley got a driver to install from laptopvideo2go.

If you load off MS-DOS with 3gb you'll have plenty of left over memory to load up apps. Still working on getting DX-10 working with it though, and driver support is scarce at best. 3.1 is just to buggy, so I never upgraded.

No but seriously I use Vista x64 and don't have nearly as many problems as people would think.

I don't know where you are looking or what you are doing, this thread clearly proves that if XP is worse than Vista, the weak link in XP is the user.

You can't find the drivers... but when you do they don't install??? You're either finding the wrong drivers or you aren't installing them correctly. Do you know how to manually install drivers?

Crysis murders XP with Vista? Please explain.

You obviously WANT vista on your laptop, so what is the point of this thread if all you do is complain about XP?

i got everything to work, and it was a hassle. Actually i did everything to avoid vista like installing windows 7 then installing windows xp, but after all of that it seems like vista is better. and it probably is

My 7811 is the first time I didn't blow Vista away. The sound driver problems kept me from using XP. Did me a favor really. Vista Ultimate 64 and lovin' it. But old XP is fine for my machines that won't take Vista. Either system is great.

i have xp on my old machine since it cant support vista, and its fine.

It's just what ive noticed is if a machine is designed for vista, then your better off using what its designed for.

I tried xp too see gaming performance increases, but there were non, there was even a slowdown, because of drivers.

I did manage to finally get the sound to work, but i know xp pro x64 i could never get it to work on there lol

so now im back to vista thinking if i should use 7 or vista.

And after being out so long, all the updates have made the gap over game performance pretty small, and some games actually run better on vista.

Hopefully windows 7 is something awesome lol, i tried it before and it almost doubled my fps in counter strike source

Incredible truth in this statement here. I am all for getting things that aren't made to run... running. But all this XP downgrade nonsense on beastly computers is ridiculous.

Its a matter of opinion and what the user wants, I'm taking the performance route.
