Yesterday I ordered this notebook from Gateway for my husband. It has almost everything he wants: widescreen, centrino, dvd-burner, expandable, s-video output. What it doesn't have is the Ultrabright screen -- it's not even an option. I have this screen on my 4530GZ. I like it. Are we going to be disappointed with the screen on the m460? Is it going to be comparable to the screen I'm looking at right now on my desktop, which is Gateway's 15" LCD flat panel (I think it's the called the 1530, not sure).

I'm obsessing about this screen thing because my husband wears glasses for reading. Gateway had no response as to why it's not even an option for the m460. On the notebooks where it is optional, it's a $20 add-on. Can something so cheaply added on really make that much of a difference?

I guess we'll know how we like it when it gets here. As far as I could tell, there is no retail equivalent to this model so we couldn't go look at it somewhere.

    Thanks for listening!

edited to add: this will be our 4th gateway pc. I don't understand why they aren't more popular. I think they are great values -- the desktop I bought in '98 is still in use!

Personally I do not like the glossy screens. Some people it bothers, others it does not. I would head over to Best Buy or Circuit City to see if you can look at them side by side. Gateway's quality is not as good as IBM or Fujitsu, and their not priced as low as Dell probably why they are not as popular. Good Luck.

    zazonz, thanks for the response.

Each time I bought a gateway in the past I compared prices w/ Dell for the same configuration and found that Gateway had the better price. After reading your post, I went to Dell.com and tried again and sure enough Dell was cheaper because they were having a 30% off sale. Not by much, but still a little cheaper. (Without the 30% off, Dell would be *far* more expensive.)

So, I cancelled the Gateway order and ordered a Dell i6000D. The main reason I did this was not to save the $150 but because Dell had the option of upgrading to a higher resolution "ultrasharp" screen. Hopefully I didn't make a mistake because higher resolution may not be a good thing for my far-sighted husband! Now, apparently, there's a $750 coupon for Dell which would make for an even better (slightly) deal, but it's not worth it for us to cancel and re-order.

I feel guilty shafting Gateway! I have had nothing but good luck with my Gateway products and I feel like I'm tempting fate by switching to Dell, LOL.

Dell's a great company! And the Gateway notebook your looking at won't give you any trouble. Our company budgets would not allow us to buy Dell systems. So we went to Gateway...

If price is a problem I can understand. But remember... somtimes you DO get what you pay for[8D]

I wear glasses also and have tri focals. I have an anti glare coating on them. When using my 7422GX notebook I simply adjust the screen away from most backlighting in my office and home.

Very happy with the system itself!
