Well as far as gaming go's i have both OS's installed on my machine and the framerates are identical and in some instance smoother on vista . I think personally the reason i dont see the performance boost i was hoping on xp is this machine was designed from the ground up to run vista even though it runs xp fine. on my desktop there are some performance differences between both OS but not the same on my lappy .

The basics in the performance difference (post SP1 for Vista)

80% of the time they are identical

20% of the time XP will give you 1 to 2 FPS better

In all instances of DX10 vista dominates XP, due to XP not being DX10 able.

So really i would suggest Vista, simple because of the DX10 capability, and the fact that in MOST cases it doesn't really matter and when it does the increase in performance is negligible.

Remembering of course that 90% of all statics posted online are made up on the spot :p So these numbers are likely to be skewed by my experience.

Windows XP was excellent and still is. I had Vista before SP 1 and it sucked, but with SP 1 my internet problems were fixed and it booted up a lot faster too. If you have the system for Vista run it with SP 1. Otherwise, if you aren't ready to venture...stick with XP. However, I am thinking that Microsoft is going to boot XP soon entirely.
