What do you think of the 4K screen? Can you do a battery test? Thanks

Screen is great. Battery life, not so much. I haven't started my more thorough tests yet though, so I don't want to jump the gun.TyroG likes this.

What are temperatures like?
Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk -
What do you think of the laptop fan noise? Heard fan noise should be lower since it's max q; and any coil whine issue?
-
Internal temps are decent. There's no concern of the GPU overheating as I've only seen it as high as the low 80s so far. The CPU is also ok, but when you overclock it, that changes and temps get into the 90s. A new paste job would make things perfect. I haven't run stress tests yet - only benchmarks and gaming.
External temps are a little on the hot side. Left leg area was 52C at the max and the center got as high as 55C. Give or take a couple degrees - this is all of the top of my head since my notes are at home. It's pretty much what I expected but this will be too hot for lap use unless you have good tolerance or turn the settings down a little.TyroG and ThePerfectStorm like this. -
This is my biggest disappointment so far. It's almost as if they ignored the MaxQ guidelines (if they really even exist). Again, no numbers yet, but these fans are significantly louder than the ones on the Asus Zephyrus, which was right on the edge of the 40dB mark. Then again, this one has a better CPU so that might be the cause. Also, the fan control settings can be controlled, so I still have some testing to do with that. Maybe I can turn them down manually and see how temps are. More to come.TyroG likes this.

Nice info I'm not decided yet if I take the AERO 15 or this X5 MD... or even the X7 DT V7
-
I'm pretty positive I'll end up happy with the X7 DT. I generally accept this kind of fan noise and temps in gaming laptops. But not at the expense of unnecessary cost. There's a time and a place for MaxQ and this is not it. It's not overly thin, the fans are not ultra quiet and an overcloked 1070 outperforms the GPU. I can't think of a single reason to throw money away on this one over the standard X5 V7.
-
GPU score - 19,269 - X5V6 with GTX 1070. My 1070 at stock outperforms the 1080 Max-Q.
Sad times

Is the MD the exact same chassis as the standard X5? If it is there is no excuse for this ****.
-
It is the same. I'm going to blast them for it in my review. I gave the Asus Zephyrus a pass because I don't think you could possibly put a full powered 1070 in that chassis. For that model, MaxQ at least makes some sense. But for this one, it's not even close.MiSJAH likes this.

X5 V7 more powerful than the X5 MD?
what's the point of the X5 MD? I hope it have atleast a better battery and is way quieter.
-
That'll be the X5 V6 with I7- 6820HK and GTX 1070....
Bring on the X9.... -
The battery life should be identical between models. The only varying factor is the GPU, which probably has the same power consumption at low loads. The 4k screen is a battery hog, so the 3k version would probably be better.
As for fan noise, the MD *may* be quieter. I would never recommend anyone paying more money for less fan noise though. Apples to apples with the 4k screen, the X5 V7 is $350 cheaper than the MD. -
I almost went with the X5 v7 over the X7 v7 but the screen resolution is just bad for a 15".
-
Yeah 4k is overkill. The nice part about gsync is Nvidia leaves custom resolutions unlocked without having special drivers. I actually liked the res set at 2880x1620. Even better, at 2560x1440. If I were to keep this, I would permanently keep the resolution at QHD. Games play fantastic at that resolution as well.
I'm seriously considering getting the 4k X7 DT and doing this, now that I know it looks and plays well even though it's scaled. I know there's a qhd option, but it's tn and I really like full gamut IPS screens.TyroG likes this. -
Did I read somewhere that the Max Q gpus do better in games than their benchmarks would indicate (NBC maybe)?
Or is that incorrect / irrelevant?
I'm new to all this. -
X5 V7 vs X5 MD vs X7 DT V7? This is me now, I like the portability of the X5 but I like the 100% Adobe RGB on the X7 and of course the real 1080 GTX ...
-
Hop on the X5v6 owners lounge if you want someone to chat with about the X5v7. Someone there has it
Yes but is the 1080 gonna be power limited again? It would really be a bummer if it were

How do you find your X7 V7? Is it the 1080GTX?
-
Gonna check the thread thanks, also anyone know if the ram is on the laptop is on the otherside of the motherboard ? So I can upgrade easily to 64GB?
-
On the X5 yes, two of the four slot are occupied with the two empty ones directly accessible by just removing the bottom cover. On the X7, all four slots are directly accessible from the bottom
Edit: you'll probably end up with 48GB of RAM if you order an X5 since the two occupied slots are pretty hard to reach and not worth the risk of breaking something when trying to remove the MB

I wanted the X7 v7 DT but couldn't justify the $400 for the 1080.
Nope, I have the X7 v7 1070 and not the X7 DT v7 1080.
There is lots to like about this laptop but I'll just list the negatives.
1. took forever to release, I feel by the time you actually get one, the newer revision was just announced.
2. Coming from MSI GS73VR 1060, I don't like the backlighting (not very bright around the keys) and keyboard feel condensed. I guess I'll just have to get use to after time.
3. Not sure why, I couldn't install NV GTX using the laptop drivers, I kept getting hardware is not recognized, blah blah. I had to use the drivers from Aorus X7 v7 site.
I decided to re-paste and use ICD Diamond as that is the only one I had and waiting for my Thermal Grizzy & CLU liquid metal to arrive, the result was a little worst than stock. I most likely did a bad job but twice? Looks like I'll just wait for my liquid metal to arrive before taking it apart and re-doing.
Under-volt my CPU to by .180 and seeing the temp drops during benchmarking made me smile and wished I did this sooner on all my previous laptops.
My spare ac adapters doesn't work on the Aorus as it worked with my old Gigabyte x37 v5 and MSI GS73VR, placed an order on Amazon for a 3rd party. -
Yeah, Aorus has some DRM or something on the adapters now. I tried using an AW17 adapter with the x7 DT v6 and it kept shutting the adapter down. Annoying...
Can you please run a level 4 overclock on both CPU and GPU and post your firestrike score? I'm curious how it compares with the v6. I might consider the 1070 model since it's so much cheaper.
Also, hows the construction of the palm rest. I was under the impression it was the same as the v6, but that's not the case with the x5 models. The palm rest, bottom plate and edges are three separate parts. The visible seam on the top is not that attractive at all. I'm also not convinced yet that the palm rest is even metal. I know the edges are definitely plastic. It's a step up with the keyboard at least. I'm hoping they left the x7 alone because the model last year was great. Thanks in advance. -
@Derek712 Hey, how do you find the X5 MD for now ? Tested games? How do you compare it to the Zephyrus?
-
It's ok but the Zephyrus is way better. Zephyrus wins on the screen, build quality, compact design and performance. X5 MD wins on the keyboard and being more normal - that's about it. If I had to choose, the Zephyrus would be the obvious choice. If the price wasn't higher and they added 30 watts to the PSU so I could hey the same performance, it would be a somewhat better comparison. But considering the X5 V7 performance is better, and at a cheaper price, there's noreason to even purchase the MD. Except bragging rights, which is stupid.
MaxQ makes sense for the Zephyrus, not the X5.Darkhan likes this. -
The thing with the Zephyrus is it only have one space for a m.2 and only max 24gb + only 50w battery and the weird placement of the keyboard/mouse... but I agree the screen is better but I prefer 4K; still not decided what should I do... I still don't understand why the X5 MD is don't have better performance than the X5 V6/V7 :/phila_delphia likes this.
-
Yeah the battery life on the Zephyrus was pathetic. The keyboard I got used to though and the track pad was actually really great, except for how narrow it was. There's only a small niche that would be totally satisfied with the Zephyrus. There are too many sacrifices in my case.TyroG likes this.

Hi, My X5 MD just got delivered. I won't be able to do anything today; as I'm doing a full tune up on my car. Are you basing the performance on real world use or just scores. What have you done to really test the system? Have you overcooked both the GPU and CPU?
Sent from my LG-H918 using Tapatalk -
@Derek712 Could you check the screen model number or tell us what's the color gamut of the screen? SRGB & ARGB? Thanks
-
I can provide the FS score later when I'm home from work. This is my first Aorous X7 v7 with no issues with the palm rest and don't have access to a v6 so I'm not sure what to say.
-
I'm just wondering if it's a unibody construction or if there's a seam on the top like with the x5
-
Gotcha, will check later and report back.
-
I'm actually quite surprised by the results, looks like my CPU UV -.180 V and ICD paste did a decent job.
My specs:
Aorus X7 v7 i7 7820 1070 Lv 4 CPU/GPU OC 48GB RAM 2TB NVME (Raid -0) 2TB HDD
Top panel looks like an unibody, no seams as I can tell and made of metal.Attached Files:

Thanks for checking that. Nice to know they kept the design the same. Looking forward to the DT.
-
You're welcome, tell us what you think once you get your DT and let us know once you're done with your reviews. I'm really enjoying everything so far. -
Will do. I should have this one done by the weekend. I don't get the DT for a couple weeks though.
-
Both. The scores are about 10-15% lower than the Zephyrus, across the board. The actual game benchmarks are 5-10% lower. I've tried overclocking both the CPU and GPU. The CPU gets a little boost but overclocking the GPU does practically nothing. The power limits are to blame.
-
Wow. For the 7820 to be outperformed by the 7700 is utterly shameful. So much for the cooling tweaks Aorus continually made reference to during the multiple delays of their Kaby Lake products.

It's not the cpu, it's the GPU that's the problem. The CPU operations in the Aorus crush the Zephyrus.Vistar Shook likes this.

Have you tried uninstalling the driver completely bevore upgrading to a later Version? I remember that I had the same issue with my former Clevo 1070.
But I am not exactly sure why I could use regular drivers after the initial probelms.
Best regards

We might not be able to get accrued numbers for the GPU because everytime I run the Fire Strike. I keep getting a Validation warning saying Graphics driver is not approved. Here go my scores for the X5 MD. I updated all drivers. I'm waiting until I get the time to update to Windows 10 Pro with creators update. I have two 2TB 960 Pro and G.SKILL RIPJAWS DDR4 SO-DIMM MEMORY
DDR4-3000 32GB Memory.

The noise is just right can't hear it as much and I love the 4k screen and the colors just pop. The build quality of the laptop is just great nothing feels cheap.

Can you give an estimate of the battery life ? Also can you test a game and give the fps like maybe The witcher 3 or whatever game you have so we can compare it to the Zephyrus.Vistar Shook likes this.
Aorus X5 V7, X7 V7, DT X7 all estimated for June release in USA
