I was going to give you my experience on battery but it appears it would be invalid as I found out the 980M was being run at max clocks as soon as Steam, Origin, Uplay, GPU-Z etc. were launched. I wondered why the fans were noisier than yesterday and battery was less than I had hoped. That was the reason why, the 980M wasn't being allowed to idle. Anyhoo, got that fixed via NVIDIA Control Panel.
Remembered that I had some feedback to submit for some peer-assessed coursework that had to be done by midnight tonight - so I've done that now (there always seems to be another reason for delay doesn't there?). I am trying to get stuff done (updated pics in first post for example, with higher-quality shots) but life keep getting in the way.
Anyway, definitely benchmarks this evening. Stay tuned!
EDIT: Who was the guy that wanted me to weight the laptop? Because I did and it was 2.5kg exactly with the ODD installed. Also I'll measure the decibels of the fan via smartphone app right now...

I'd be interested to learn more about this, but from what I understand so far, the additional VRAM isn't going to improve frame rate, just reduce the hitching/stuttering that can occur in these games when you run out of space in VRAM on other cards, particularly on these titles that eat VRAM.
When that happens, the old texture data needs to be switched out to make room and new textures loaded up from your drive and/or system RAM into the VRAM. Hitching or stuttering results from that slight pause when your texture data is getting switched in/out of VRAM, loading up from the drive or system memory, etc. With 8GB that is going to happen less often than it will on a 2GB or 3GB card.flamy likes this. -

Have you been able to try without the 1 Go HDD provided and without the ODD ?
Thanks ! -

?
Also, did you already hear back from OCUK how to claim your free game? -

Next on the to-do list... a full list of 1620p vs 1152p vs 1080p benchmarks... (2048x1152 is 16:9, so games can scale to that resolution just as well as at 1080p; even better quality vs 1080p but not as demanding as full 1620p)

I'm 110% sure since Cakefish and I bought it from the same retailer (OC.uk) and I've been in constant email contact with them and here's their answer when I mentioned the same thing you've mentioned to me
Hope that clears things up when it comes to the free game and OC.uk. -
No chance you can do those noise measurements again with your phone right around where your head is while using it? Though since you gave comparison to another notebook they are somewhat useful anyway.
-
I thought it was limited to just a very few vendors, meaning we would never get it. Unless they are eluding to more vendors being added?

If I was you I'd optimise the CPU/GPU relationship (with possible GPU overclock) so you can understand how your system behaves before you go into the detail of how performance scales with resolution, like how I mentioned back in post #322 (it will help you get the most out of your system sooner rather than later):

I've actually got a plan sorted out for this evening:
I will be doing a 1620p vs 1152p vs 1080p comparison. Here's how it will work:
- only games with in-built benchmarks will be used tonight (will expand to other games such as Crysis 3, Far Cry 3, The Witcher 2 etc. tomorrow)
- min, max & average fps noted for each game along with max GPU/CPU temps
- maximum settings will be utilised, excluding any SSAA
- these games will be used; Metro 2033 Redux, Metro Last Light Redux, Crysis 1, Crysis Warhead, BioShock Infinite, Tomb Raider, Total War Rome II, Hard Reset, Batman Arkham City, Just Cause 2.
That sound good?
Will do after running the planned set of benchmarks.

But Scan have the free game for P35W v3.
Edit [06/11/2014]: here's link http://www.scan.co.uk/products/156-...28gb-ssd-6gb-nvidia-geforce-gtx-970m-dvdrw-wi
Somehow only 970m get the free game, not 980m.

Ok, I don't post a lot on these forum, but I actually have a question for cakefish
If you have a 120hz screen, could you try plugging it to the P35X and check if it can go over 60hz? Most of those laptops come with optimus and an intel HD, so the maximum you can have no matter what is 60fps at 60hz refresh rate...I was debating about getting myself a light gaming laptop and an oculus rift, which needs a 75hz refresh rate :/ -
Of course and there is a fine print that says selected retailers only.
You folks are more than welcome to contact OC.uk yourselves and see if they'll give you something different from what I was told yesterday. I'm just passing to you what transpired between me and them (OC.uk). -
Well... lucky me that my friend bought a pair of noise-isolating fones for me. I was thinking I'd only use that when flying.moviemarketing likes this.

Maybe you could record a short video with your phone while doing benchmarks (with game sounds set to levels you would normally use)?
That would give some idea about fan noise under realistic conditions. Something like they did with Clevo here:

I think that will be useful if you monitor CPU & GPU clocks throughout the process so you know if there's throttling and what turbo boosts can be maintained on the CPU & GPU. That will be useful to determine how your system behaves at baseline (assuming you're running the CPU & GPU at stock). I think we already know how it will scale with resolution roughly anyway, so that particular part wouldn't be that interesting to me, but I can see why you want to do it, you want to work out what resolution you have to downscale to.Cakefish likes this. -
Interesting, seemed like everywhere elso but OCUK is giving away the free game.

Good idea. I'll make a note of any throttle behaviour I find.

Cakefish can you include BF4 in that list? -
Cakefish, in yesterday's pics, you had posted your Clevo, and it looked terrific (the back lid) - all black sheen. Was that customized by you?

Yeah, I gave up after their last reply. It's not like I play any of those games anyways. But, maybe down the road, I'll get lucky and they send me a code.

Good plan!
Here's some suggestions you might take into consideration:
- Record the sound levels when benchmarking. Two fies in one hit!
- Record CPU and GPU clockspeeds during benchmarking.
- Record system total power draw during benchmarking to see if there may be some headroom for the 180W PSU (how do you monitor this though?). EDIT: I found this program: http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/fe9e10c5-5c5b-450c-a674-daf55565f794/

I remember you installed an ssd. Which one did you go for and what make are the msata or more to the point what is the read/write speeds in raid 0 and do I need to upgrade ( Subjective I suppose)

Same thing happened with me lol... stuck at customs. Did you have to talk to a customs rep to get it processed or will it just come on its own eventually??

Whats your Steam ID, I have no issue donating a free key/gift to support this review, as I know this would help many out here in their decision. I for once don't play many FPS's but its fun time to time, however I'd like to support this.

I will download some SSD benchmarking tools to measure that for you. I think they are Lite-On mSATA drives, will have to double check. I am still waiting on my Samsung 850 Pro due to issues with delivery (should be dispatched tomorrow and arrive next week, though I don't know if I'll be at the house to take delivery - tempted to cancel, get a refund and go with Crucial M550 instead which I can have by the weekend). In the meantime, I have a Kingston HyperX Fury 240GB SSD, which I got on offer in a local physical store.
I'm selling mine soon. It'll be difficult to part ways with it, it has served me very well, but I cannot justify having 3 laptops at once (my Samsung is also going to be sold too).
Crossing my fingers for you! Hope you won't have to wait too long.
Thanks for the heads up, I'll check it out for sure

I opted for this system mostly for the battery. Having my own CNC and a few other tools, making the system quiet and cool wont be an issue for me later on.
M.2 form factor isnt important to me yet since using a slot will sacrifice something else towards cpu/gpu, causing potential performance drops at the price of write disk speeds.
Battery is a big one for me. I wont always be plugged in when I travel a lot - gun ranges, long distance, ect. The fact that the P651SG was confirmed to be only a 4 cell at 60w/hr was a disappointment. With my needs, the battery would die in an hour.
Temperatures are quite easy to control, so it wouldnt matter which one I picked there. I guess last is the screen. With P35x having a guarantee of a quality screen, why should I bother waiting when I need a new machine by the Thanksgiving holidays?RMXO likes this. -
What is CNC and how does it help with quiet and cool?

Bah looks like BF4 is Origin not steam. I'll see what I can find.

Does Origin Support gifting? I'm not showing any options for BF4 gift, just purchase.
