Newegg recently put on the newly Aero 15.

- Bezels shrunk
- 2 PCI M.2 SSD slots!
- thunderbolt 3
- Ethernet jack
- screen changed to 1080 from 1440p
The rest are the same specs, including battery
Price - $1899
I am excited for this as gigabyte listened to the complaints of the aero 14 and made changes that will please a lot of people.
-
Wait it's immediately available? This is pretty good though. Only slightly larger footprint for a 15" screen.
-
This is it guys: The blade killer!

IDK why the fascination with the 15" laptops, when the 17" aren't that much bigger, but have more room for cooling.

 This 17" Gigabyte has the same new 7700HQ, but it's paired with a 1070 - 40% faster than a 1060 !! - it's actually cheaper than the new 15" with a 1060 !!, and it's in stock ready to order right now !!

The P-series have a generally worse build quality and cooling, and they lack TB3. Gigabyte leaves the premium level to Aorus and Aero models!

 1060 isn't enough power, so unless it's got a 1070 / 1080, it's just a thin and pretty overpriced under-performer Last edited: Apr 27, 2017 Last edited: Apr 27, 2017

But think about it: With those thin bezels, thunderbolt 3, respectable build quality and a GTX 1060, The Aero 15 puts both the Blade and XPS 15 to shame!

Yeah, for what it is, it's more of that than the others, but that's not high enough performance for the $$$$.

Thin isn't in. Thick is cool. Design with power and cooling delivered to purpose.

The thin stuff is just wishful thinking, and a lot of fan noise at load while gaming.

Thin and performance-like is "cute", and poses nicely, but I wouldn't want to game on it for long. Small keyboard, small screen, loud fans, low power.

I guess if you want it, it's very nice Darkhan, mason2smart and SkidrowSKT like this. Darkhan, mason2smart and SkidrowSKT like this.

If only it had a higher resolution screen, I would have cancelled my Aero 14 order and gotten this one instead! hmscott likes this.
-
You're right. Thick is all the way to go for a quiet machine.
Yet again, all those wishing for a thin and powerful machine looking nowhere near a Lamborghini must know the trade-off is a set of whiny fans. I personally don't mind loud fans during heavy load sessions (as long as it's never audible in work environments), and a full package is always welcome. If the Aero 15 beats both the XPS and Blade in the noise department, that 1800$ price tag is well worth it, knowing they will definitely stick in a 99Wh battery (14" has 94Wh)!

Actually, I've found most people don't really "do the math" until they are sitting in front of it, and then realize it's just too darned noisy to live with.

Especially in an office environment with low walls - cubes just shoot that whiny fan noise everywhere.

They end up keeping it running on lower performance tasks unless they are alone, and then put on their headphones to get away from the noise.

Those darned laws of thermodynamics fly in the face of the realization of functional and pretty thin gaming laptops.

Build up those muscles and tote a 17.3" behemoth, it'll game so quietly it'll go unnoticed - just make sure your nearby neighbors have those noisy thin gaming laptops, they'll take all *heat* off of you. SkidrowSKT likes this. SkidrowSKT likes this.
-
This is why I'd rather just pick an AW13 R3 and use a 130W PSU (rather than 180W, for way less heat and noise, yet almost intact performance). Too thin isn't good hmscott likes this. hmscott likes this.

Looking forward to your review @Eason. I am interested to see how thermals are since it's in a bigger chassis than the Aero 14. Presumably it cools better? We'll see!

I think that ultimately, though, this model makes the Aero 14 redundant. The body is only a tiny bit bigger, and for it you get a 1" bigger screen. It looks like a very solid competitor to the Razer Blade with it's huge bezels. It's 0.4" wider, but features a screen 1" bigger, right?Eason, hmscott and ThePerfectStorm like this.

It's a 94Wh battery if newegg's info page is to be believed. Either way as long as it's optimized right, the battery life on it should be pretty nice.
-

Considering it's a 1080p screen, according to Newegg, I would expect battery to be only slightly less than the XPS15 1080p?ThePerfectStorm likes this.
-
ThePerfectStorm Notebook DeityYeah, though I wish Notebookcheck would review the 1080p 97Wh XPS 15 so we can get an estimate.

I wouldn't think so, considering a 1050 has a much lower power draw than a 1060. I'd still imagine being able to get a full or almost full workday out of it though.CedricFP likes this.

It seems like a 4K UHD version should be out in a few months, too...
Oh well, I'll still be happy with my Aero 14 when it arrives! The good thing is that I bought a well-tested and reviewed laptop!
-

Xps 15 monitors are too slow for gaming unfortunately.. I had a free UHD and returned it, had opportunity for free FHD declined it after ghosting research... going aero 14 I believe with a 970m 6gen... (they are my price range sweet spot)

Anyone know what type of display? The specs don't indicate it's an IPS like the Aero 14. Might be TN...

Looks to be a little narrower footprint than GS63VR, but also a half pound heavier, likely from the bigger battery. Webcam may be a chin cam like the XPS 15. Full array of ports including TB3, ethernet and card reader which is nice. Plus a numpad and macro keys you don't get on the XPS.Last edited: Apr 29, 2017

Based on the Newegg pictures, I don't see macro keys. Makes me more anxious to see the X5 V7, which will probably be very similar in price, but with a GTX 1070. scrod likes this.
-

My mistake on the macro keys- the keyboard is apparently programmable like the Blade, rather than having a row of separate macro keys like the x5. Lost those to the thinner bezels apparently. Definitely still a contender for me if the display is good quality for color, brightness and viewing angles and if the fans are reasonable at idle and moderate load. Would be a shame if they stuck a low quality TN display in this chassis, though arguably better for gaming purists if it's a fast one.

Thanks! Had not watched the video.

Speaking of the keys, what on earth is with Aorus/Gigbyte continuing to include a pause/break key? If nothing else, I imagine print screen is more commonly used. Or even the insert key, because there are a handful of games that use it, along with the other keys in that 6 pack cluster. How often are people pausing text outputs in their BIOS or whatever? Does anything use the break function anymore? This shot of the layout is taken from an X5 V6.
 ![[IMG]](images/storyImages/kbframe.png)
-

It's good if you use command prompts for anything. And there still is a print screen key, its just as a function key of home.
-
Can you give me an example of someone who might use the pause function regularly? I'm not trying to be passive aggressive, I'm just genuinely curious. I don't get into command prompt often, but even when I do go in there, I've never wanted to hit the pause key for any reason (fn+home on my current rig). The only time I've used it is to stop the BIOS screen so I can see which key to press for the menu. For something marketed at gamers, I would figure the screenshot function would have a higher accessibility priority. Not that it's far out of the way, as you pointed out, it's all just minor quibbles and curiosity on my part. Though personally if I were on their design team, I would make it an insert key, to better match the layout of a full desktop keyboard. Scroll lock would be shared with num lock as it is now, and print screen, sys req, pause, and break would be behind home, end, pgup, and pgdn. Then the top row of keys (esc, f1-f12, ins, del), plus arrow keys, would be fn key system functions in addition to their normal operations. Volume, screen brightness, wifi on/off, etc. This actually makes me want to look into what 'dream' laptop key layouts are for others, to see if any two people would have completely alike preferences.

Edit: with all that said, I will say that the Aorus X5 does have the best layout I've seen, with big contributors to this sentiment being its macro keys, full-sized arrow keys, and the inclusion of pgup, pgdn, home, and end, atop a numpad.Last edited: Apr 29, 2017

It's got a smaller footprint than the GS63VR, yeah. It looks about the same size as an XPS 15, more or less.

 Aero 15: 14.00" x 9.80" x 0.78".
 XPS 15: 14.10" x 9.30" x 0.66"scrod likes this.

Yeah, and the XPS is a bit thicker in reality than the 0.66" the specs give, in my opinion, so really pretty similar overall. So you get 1060 vs 1050 on the XPS, ethernet, display port, an extra USB 3.0, an extra m.2 slot and custom keyboard, but no 4K touch option yet. And perhaps a full x4 PCIE lanes worth of TB3, instead of the x2 gimped TB3 port on the XPS. Price seems in the ballpark with Dell and Razer pricing plus or minus a little.CedricFP likes this.

Figures, I just picked up the Aero 14. (Which is fantastic, minus the absence of TB3) ehou333 likes this. ehou333 likes this.

Use regularly? Maybe coders or DOS users, but for everyday people like you or me, the only uses would be for the bios, as you mentioned, or if you typed in a weird command prompt by mistake, you could hit the pause key to maybe terminate it depending on the command prompt. It's not a perfect keyboard, but it matches most laptop keyboards, so until mainstream laptops start changing, it's probably gonna be stuck like that for a while. I do like the way you would prioritize media keys though.
-

is there a 8 gb (buy own memory memory) or 32 gb option in this laptop ?

 also whats the ssd ?
-

IIRC the Aero 14 came with 1x16GB stick of RAM, so you can add another to get to 32GB.
-

Looks like it comes with a single stick of 16GB, but you can add another stick. No other options shown right now, but maybe the 4K version will vary, or once it hits other retailers.

Also no mention if it is killer or intel wifi/lan.
-
I don't think any newer Aorus or Gigabyte laptops come preconfigured with 8GB, you could probably only get a reseller to do that for you, or maybe even 4GB if you contact them and request it. Of course, the point at which you're ordering from a reseller, it's probably better just to choose from their options rather than install your own, unless you're super duper picky. Looking at Newegg, for instance, searching within all Gigabyte and Aorus laptops for 8GB RAM units, you only get these two results, both of which are Skylake/Maxwell era units. Everything else is 16GB or 32GB.

This is good. I already have the aero 14 and happy with it but I like Gigabyte pushing the aero series with thin bezel screen and tb3. Now I just hope the price comes down by 100~300 dollars in the future. I still feel that aero 14 is a good option since it is 300 dollars cheaper
