Sorry double post. Did I mention the wireless card sucks, which can cause all kinds of bad web experiences!!!

That quote from Carmack is from the launch of Rage which is only a few years back and well within the DX11 which is still mainstream now. So no it is not as standardized as you say. Others have stated the same and they ahve credibility in terms of game developing which you do not have.
I know they have standard parts but no PC game is optimized for just 1 system and that is where the inefficiency comes in. The PC is superior yes but it is far from efficient. Imagine what they could do if they would just optimize for 1 gpu architecture and cpu. -
explain.

Sorry, See post 100 in this thread
I'd like to replace the Intel AC 7260 wireless card and want to know if anyone knows what form factor it is. Just trying to avoid opening the case to determine the form factor and then again later to after I order a card that will fit. -
ok - so got the laptop back, turns out the motherboard was shot - motherboard switched out - and replaced the harddisks, so far so good. my battery issues before also seems to have been solved, i managed to get close to 4 hours with 75% brightness - with smart manager set to power saver - and wifi was placed under airplane mode. i use a separate keyboard and mouse when in the office, but when on the road, i cringe at the quality of the keyboard, it's better than the ipad pro keyboard, but it is definately not the best build quality. the redeeming qualities are of course the hardware, havent had time to game or do any benchmarks yet, but i use the harddisks extensively to index multiple pst files with x1 and also picasa to index all the pictures. will report back in a couple of weeks to see if i notice anything.... however wasnt happy to see the upcoming v5 when i have barely broke into the v4.

If you can, take it back. The v5 literally improved everything all the way down to getting HDMI 2.0.

What exactly was improved? Looking on Newegg, the v5 costs $300 more and seems to just have a Skylake CPU instead of Broadwell.
-
That's the biggest improvement for sure. Skylake is much cooler than Broadwell, which is the limiting factor on these laptops. I saw someone post earlier that he's getting around 80C on full load without undervolting.
They also upgraded everything else as well. M.2 SSD, USB 3.1 type C, HDMI 2.0. I'm probably forgetting some more but you get the idea.

Ok. Looks like it's finally maybe time to replace my P34G that I bought at launch. For the record, my P34G is running perfectly fine in Win10 and the battery is holding up well. The only reason I'm looking at a upgrade is that the 760M is beginning to show it's age in some of the newer games.

Newegg price is inflated. Just wait till more vendor gets their stock. I'm looking at the 1080p model with 8GB and $1599 is very reasonable with a 970M. The MSI is a bit cheaper but does not have HDMI 2.0.

Just an update on the network card. Its MINI PCI-E form factor. I currently have a Atheros 2.4 a/b/g card in it, that I pulled out of another laptop, and I'm getting 60Mbs instead of 15Mbs transfers.
I have a http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00K477C5U?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00 sitting on my desk to go into it, so that I can use 2.4 and 5Ghz. Decided to not go with the AC cards as there seem to be alot of reports of issues even with the Broadcom chipset. And besides I don't have AC gear in my house anyway.
Pretty easy to install, remove all the screws on the back and carefully remove the back cover. Once off the network card accessible. remove the antenna connectors and the screw and replace.

pretty much standard size for these things. it's not as worrisome as upgrading to Skylake and DDR4.

pretty nice hardware updates. honestly, I really wanted to get the Skylake model if only it was available for the laptop which has the GTX980M GPU. unfortunately it doesn't it other than the GTX970M.
although, having said that, the performance between the Broadwell and Skylake don't seem to be that far-off or significantly high enough to consider paying an additional $300 for it. in fact, it seems that the Broadwell performed a bit better than the Skylake. size-wise, both CPUs are 14nm, the only difference is the architecture and how operations are handled and also DDR4 support which is yet to prove it's potential. I don't think that DDR4 at this stage is fully optimized considering it's a new technology and could use some further enhancements, although the potential sounds very promising.
as far as Skylake is concerned, it's biggest advantage has to be more on the overclocking and temperature side. I have yet to see a really amazing latency numbers with the new architecture as far as memory handling is concerned. so far a good DDR3 memory is sufficient enough for this generation unless developers would start making some insane software with really massive requirements which is actually happening nowadays. before, old CPUs and GPUs could give you a good 5 year run. nowadays, it seems it's yearly that your system becomes obsolete. how annoying. -
So I've been checking the p34w v3 owners thread as well as this one, and i haven't seen this issue come up.
I'm very happy with my p34v4 with some extra upgrades from xoticpc, the only problem i have is that the computer abruptly powers itself off on it's own occasionally once i start using it after it was in sleep mode. Any ideas? the computer could be idling, or i could browsing webpages/email etc. and it just turns off. This has never happened during a game or any cpu intensive activity.
Thanks -
The problem is drivers. Download the latest drivers from Intel's website and connectivity problems will go away.

Once I did a reformat and moved to the most recent versions of each app in Smart Update my v4 works smoothly
