I did and I believe I used an 8GB drive. It seems to just copy the hidden recovery partition over and make it Bootable.

I got my Aero back from RMA. The background light was flickering at high frequency, which wasn't easy to explain to the service people since they apparently didn't look at my documentation of the issue and expected the entire screen to turn off. Anyways, they agreed to exchange the screen and wow, the flickering is gone. It was indeed a faulty screen. The new screen unfortunately has a single stuck (blue) pixel. It's only visible on a black background, so the annoyance is very minor. Don't think it's worth changing the screen again.
The entire RMA process took about 3 weeks, however I acknowledge that there were holidays in Taiwan, so they didn't ship spare parts for a week or so.

Furthermore, I can confirm that the black plastic bezel around the screen is indeed glued to the screen. You could easily spot the glue drops around the old screen. The screen itself is fixed by screws on the top and bottom. It appears they forgot to reapply some glue in the bottom right edge of the bezel/cover (next to the hinge) since this plasic part sticks a bit out.
What kind of glue is used for these plastic parts? I don't want to use glue that makes the plastic bezel / cover unremovable if it ever needs to be changed again.

Can you provide a link to this video? I'm curious. Did they say something about the glue used?

I can find minor marks indicating the laptop has been opened, but that's probably unavoidable and as mentioned above the bottom right part of the screen bezel is missing some glue. Apart from that it's fine. Note that the RMA was not in the US/EU, so I cannot speak for that. I'm pretty close to Taiwan. Global warranty works!

The Aero uses optimus and afaik someone tried here and the display port is NOT directly connected to the GPU. So gsync won't work.

Thank you for saying would not work because dp is not gpu-direct. I searched this thread for g-sync, could not find somebody who tried it. on gs73vr forum people also thought would not work, then somebody tried it, and it worked!

Someone on this thread reported a better Firestrike score when using displayport. Or maybe just noticeably better frame rates and they believed it was because it wasn't passing through the igpu. If that is the case, gsync may well work over displayport.

What is the sound driver? In my aw13 there was an update found real tek sound drivers I believe so I accepted it. Then oddly the sound stopped working completely so I tried to system restore it. Wouldn't work but I just roll back the drivers. And then the sound was fixed again. This was last night I did this.

Just got my new Kaby Lake Aero on Friday, screen is flawless, battery life seems great thus far. However, the spacebar on my particular model seems to be finicky at best. The left/right edges along with a good portion of the top of the spacebar, tend to space erratically when pressed (Quite a bummer when using WASD in gaming and you don't jump when you press the spacebar.)
Is this a "How it is" function of the keyboard, or is mine particularly bad? Saw two posts earlier in the thread about a similiar condition, but little corroboration.

    Thanks.

I haven't had any issues with the keyboard here but it does have a very stiff feeling compared to other laptops (which is a great feature to me). I use a mechanical keyboard normally and type very heavy, so I was assuming that the earlier posts were possibly because people aren't used to the force required to depress the key.

I'll have a play around with mine to see if it has any sort of actuation dead spots though. Maybe it's just the way I hit the bar that has caused me not to have any issues.

yes its the newest version which makes me wonder if its a driver problem or a hardware problem but i have tried to revert it to the older version and it didn't fix and i narrowed it down. it only occurs when the laptop goes on hibernate and after that i have to reinstall the driver.

My spacebar responds whereever I press, just tried. Where do you notice this? Just to be sure, you are actually pressing 'hard' enough to trigger the key?

Not sure if using hibernation on an SSD only notebook is the best. Especially with that much RAM. I usually just use sleep when pausing for some (shorter) time like lunch break.

I did do a fresh install from Microsoft media, not the included recovery partition, so perhaps that contributes.

I notice the issue across the very top edge of the spacebar, or the left right edges. With enough force, a space appears, but the extreme edges/top require noticeably more force than the center/lower portions of the bar. Just trying to work out if its a common issue and thus worth an exchange/RMA, or if its a "That's how it is, get use to it."

Did you create a bootable install USB/CD from within windows? I made a backup of the recovery partition with the USB backup tool pre-installed from Gigabyte, but doing a clean windows one might be good as well.

If I press the spacebar with a toothpick at the edges, the top right corner sometimes doesn't trigger a space. However if you press this area with your finger, at least half of it is pressing on the surrounding keyboard cover and not the key, thus lowering pressure. With finger completely on the key there is no response issue. The keyboard as a whole is quite hard / sturdy, that is definitely something one has get used to.

The issue persists in sleep mode as well. I did a fresh install of windows when I received the lappy.

And I gave up trying to fix it last night and went I tried today morning the bloody thing is working. I'm at my wits end

Thanks for the response Re: Keyboard, sounds like mine isn't working quite right, luckily Newegg had them back in stock today.

I had a windows 10 disc I created previously from the Microsoft site where you can download the windows ISOs using their tool. I did get a prompt this afternoon when resuming from sleep to the effect of "Trouble with Sound?" on the lock screen. Did not follow the notice though.

okay now that you mentioned it i tried pressing the top right of my spacebar and doesn't register 1/3 times but i don't think i'll ever notice this the way i type im also used to blue switch mechanical keyboards so i might be bias. the sound issue tho im still yet to figure out if its driver or hardware issue.

I think this is a hardware issue. i reinstalled windows without shutting the pc down and after installing all the drivers and everything i still got no sound from the speakers. once i shut it down properly it works. :(

and guess what i was so annoyed i just closed the lid which puts the lap on sleep mode and when i turn it back on the sound is there. im soooo confused.

No this happens in sleep mode also. i have turned off hibernate using powercfg -h off as well as faststartup in power options. another scenario where no sound occurs is when i close the lid off on lap and plug it into the charger and no sound. restarting does not fix it but shutting down works.

No issues with sleep here. The device is listed as properly functioning? Does troubleshoot find anything?
You can check if some weird power saving options turn it off, but it sounds more like some hardware fault.

yes the devices are working properly when i look at device manager. when i plug in headphones they also work i can see the bars moving in playback devices. its just the speakers stop working after sleep/hibernation. restart wont fix it only shut down will.

Has anybody figured out how to use multiple monitors with Linux? My monitor (DELL S2409W) works perfectly with HDMI under Windows, but I cannot get Arch Linux to recognize it at all.

Anyone else waiting for their order from GenTechPc? I put mine on 2/11 and the website still shows the status as "Processing". I sent them an email last week and asked about that, and they said they were already working on it (I asked upgraded thermal paste and HDD), and that I could expect it to be shipped this week. However, in past times I've bought from them, I received an email after the order was processed (i.e. after they successfully received my payment). I wonder if they were bluffing so I didn't cancel my order.

So can anyone with the KabyLake version confirm their laptop sound works after coming out of Sleep/Hibernate for at least 5 mins? I'm going to RMA mine and was wondering if I should bother getting another one if all kabylake ones have this problem I will not.

PS. i did a full clean install of windows and it did not solve the issue.

No problems here with the sound after sleep/hibernate on my Aero with Kaby Lake.

The only thing with sleep/hibernating which is strange is that the laptop needs unreasonable long time to wake up and be back to the desktop. But I guess that is more an issue of the sensor which logs the lid opening is quite 'pessimistic'

My kaby lake version comes out of sleep and plays audio no problem. Getting a second one tomorrow to attempt to resolve the spacebar issue and will re-check with the new system.

I would suggest you try Uninstall in the Realtek driver entirely, and letting windows use its own, and then update through windows update.

I just dried to use the intel driver update tool on my video driver and it actually downgraded me from 20.x to 15.x and the brightness setting stopped working. I've Nov learned that Windows update drivers seem to be pretty good

Got the second Aero 14, no issue with the space bar on the replacement, so it was a defect. This computer (Kaby Lake) also resumes from sleep/hibernate with no sound issues.

Anyone using the SmartManager's (or equivalent tool's) screen color temperature settings? What's a good color Temp for general work? It offers 5800, 6000, 6500, 6800K and Native Color.
In the evening using the blue light killer slide bar feels quite good, especially if you're reading. Unfortunately it doesn't tell you the color temp as it is in %, I'd guess it's about 1000K at 100%.

Or did you have any experience with another color temp tool like flux?

There is a Korean review of Aero 14v6 which I will link below. The credit goes to the reviewer, Nakotaku from playwares.
He tested the device using KONICA MINOLTACA-310 and it's accompanying ColorTaster program.
In terms of color reproduction range, the 5800K~6000K gave 102% sRGB and was the closest to the sRGB standard.

Next, the color temperature that were closest to the standard was Smart Manager 6000K.
I hope this helps.... I am not an expert so I am just looking at his conclusions of the test.

Found in table of contents 9~12. (There is a tab that you click and scroll down. Or just press the page links found in the box of the initial page.)

Hey guys, I have been using my aero 14 for about two weeks now. I was wondering if there is a way to replace the EmptyProject11.exe with something that will open and instantly close but will ultimately do nothing. For now, I have just moved the Emptyproject11.exe to the desktop but I keep getting an error on start up because of it.

Wow, thanks! I found the 6000K setting quite good for working. I wonder though that 100% Blue light killer only got down to 4000K as the screen turns quite yellowish. While, that may be the point ... it doesn't turn reddish, so it does not cut as much from the high energy spectrum.
    What settings are you using?

You can actually search this thread for the answer ...
The easiest way to eliminate emptyproject11.exe is by replacing it (same name!) with an .exe that does nothing. You can either compile an 'empty project' yourself that does nothing (one can use the built in csc c# compiler of windows) or even easier just use one of the system .exe that do nothing when called without arguments ...
eg: go to Windows\System32 and copy(!) dllhost.exe to some place, rename it and replace the emptyproject11.exe in the smartmanager folder with it.

ps: the power consumption indeed drops with empty project not running. The Package Power in Throttlestop drops from like 13W to 1W in idle. I'm not sure how that's calculated / measured, though.

I am glad the link was helpful! As for me, I am using the Native Display because I found that to be the "brightest" and turning the blue-light killer to 100% made the screen turn reddish so I did not touch that.

Going to ask again since it seems to be more active now than last week...

Has anybody gotten the laptop to see external monitors within Linux? I can't get my monitor (DELL S2409W using HDMI) to be detected by Arch Linux; while Windows works perfectly. I'm using the proprietary drivers with bumblebee.

That's true, if you need high brightness, native reaches about 300 luminance with the overall not so bright screen. I guess it depends a lot on the environment you're using the laptop at. Native at 100% appears to bright for me ;).
The blue light killer reduces the amount of higher energy blue light which may worsen your sleep rhythm. It's great if you're reading in a dark room. Wouldn't recommend for movies or any color sensitive work.

I guess when you completely uninstall the smart manager the screen is always in native mode?

not using Linux, you'll probably have to debug that and see where it hangs.

Anyone using ramdisk to reduce writes on the SSD? I found apps like Chrome generate a huge amount of (cache/tmp) files when watching videos, streams, etc. (several GBs). I could generate up to 10GB writes in a few hours. I moved the cache dir and flash folder to a small ramdisk, which reduces writes by about 80%.
Now thinking to move the windows temp dir as well, but it might get quite big.

What your current total host writes on the SSD? You can check with HWiNFO, for example.

    Hello guys.

After 60 pages (I started at page 15), I finally made it to the end.

I'm interested in a model to replace my current laptop that's been working for the last 6 years. So I'd like to something able to make another 5 or 6 years.

I have a XPS15 (i7, 8gb ram, discrete nvidia GPU, SSD sata 3). It's still very nice for regular use, and I came to conclusion that nowadays (I mean, in the last 6 years, at least), the GPU is the bottleneck of a system, in general. Mine will probably fulfill my needs, even when I need further power (matlab, optimization etc.). But I notice some poor performance even when I'm browsing, youtubing and stuff, probably related to GPU.

The good about my laptop is that whenever I had to change parts, I could find spare parts. There is a problem with the hinges for this model, for example, that get stiffer with time, ending stuck after some time. With that, if I try to close the lid, the bezel gets broke so I end up changing the cover. I've changed the cover 3 times (a 4th time when the LCD screen broke). I have also changed the battery and the keyboard (and I plan to change the speakers too, if I keep it with me).

I've always found parts on ebay or aliexpress (or equivalent in my country) for the model.

Another thing is that is easy for me to upgrade anything inside, so I never had to ask for any support from Dell.

That said, I had 2 goals: find a new laptop with a relatively top notch GPU (but not for rocket science calculations/performance, but not to be a crap in a 5 years time) and maintainability over time (being able to find parts even for discontinued models).

After some research, I decided to get a 1060 or up GPU, leaving me with GS63VR, P35 and GL502VM (mainly because I'm coming from a 15.6" display), but they all looked to have some problems, especially related with temperature (internals and palmrest/keyboard), "upgradability" (gs63vr hard to change nvme ssd), ability to work with optimus (for increased battery time, eliminating GL502). For those reasons, I included aero 14 and gs43vr in the contest.

RIght now, aero is ahead. I have a question for you:
    1) Do you have any experience in finding parts for gigabyte laptops for old models? I had a good experience with Dell and if I had an option of a 1060 in a xps 15 or alienware wasn't too bulky and more low profile, it would be in the list too.

Did anyone have problem with the screen turning off randomly? It is not in sleep mode, because it just went black while in use. However, pressing keys, mouse, or the power button will not turn it on/off.

Is yours locking up when it does it? For instance if you were watching a video when the screen went black does the audio stop as well? If so, then yes. I'm getting ready to RMA mine for doing that.

Mine occurred when I was just on the Microsoft edge and just reading papers. I did not run any videos though. Was your computer also running while the screen was black?

Mine locks at random times in a way that sounds similar to yours. Screen goes black but the backlight and keyboard backlights and power light stay on. It won't respond to any input and the only thing you can do is hold the power button down and force it to shut off.

    Hey,
Mine also do exactly what you just described. How long did you have your laptop for? Did you see it happen recently or soon after you bought it. It is a little bit frustrating now because I hate turning it off by holding the power

P.S. Do you know if this is some kind of driver issue or hardware issue?

I recently undervolted my cpu -.135 and it did not happen before this. I am going to return XTU off and see if undervolt was the problem... did you undervolt your laptop too?

Took delivery of a Kaby Lake version last week here in the UK. What a stunning machine it is too. No real issues, but questions are

    1) Where can I buy a second power supply

    2) Why is the screen resolution so high. I really don't like the inconsistent scaling that Windows 10 applies. Seems a 1080p option would be more than enough for a 14" screen and games would be faster.

    3) Why does "emptyproject11.exe" even exist? Seems odd to install something that keeps the 1060 GPU on when not needed and drains the battery all the time and uses up CPU time some of the time.

From my understanding, it exists to prevent the microstuttering issues that happen in Windows 10 when an app recruits the nVidia GPU and Optimus software has to switch from iGPU to discrete.

For example, a very common -- I believe ubiquitous -- example of this happening is when clicking the battery indicator. AFAIK, that used to reliably cause a half-second pause, or stutter.

I am not sure if this has since been fixed in Windows 10 or nVidia driver updates, though.
