Has anyone got the per key RGB lighting to switch automatically between applications? I've had no luck doing so even after choose the .exe to activate the profile. The fusion software is counter intuitive.

Hello, everyone
I'll be getting my aero 15 tomorrow , and would like to know if anyone has tried installing ubuntu on the second SSD , and if it did work out ?
Thank you ! -
Follow the backlinks to older postings and you'll find the instructions to install these drivers.
However, I agree that there's a lot of good information hidden in this (currently) 71 pages long thread but who's going to read through all of them? Is there an AERO 15 related Wiki or similar page to collate all the good ideas and tutorials in one place? -
Hey guys! Happy new owner of new Aero 15 here. A quick, albeit perhaps interesting question about power and the 1060 in the laptop.
I have noticed that similarly and even in respect less power hungry config equipped Razer Blade 14 2017 (7700HQ, 1060, only 1 NVME slot, smaller screen, no LED light at the back etc.) has 165W power brick (similarly to MSI GE62VR 6RF with even 180W) while both Aero 14, 15 have only 150W. My question are:
- Does this hinder GPU performance? Because lets face it, it will be power limited (that's what I get most of the time in Afterburner) and thus achieve lower boost?
- If so, would connecting higher W brick solve this? Or is the power delivery just not there/or its limited in BIOS somehow?
- If so (#1), would running CPU at lower speed allow more power to GPU?

It's only a 10% difference. It could be the Gigabyte power adapter is more efficient. You'd need to look at the label on the power supply to compare the output DC voltage and current on the different bricks depending if they are rated for input or output power. It could also be that Aero 15 itself consumes slightly less power overall. The difference in the panel could easily account for that. Even in the unlikely event that Gigabyte underpowered the adapter and you were actually 15W short on power, the battery could make up for that for at least 6 hours, assuming you were playing at full CPU/GPU power for 6 hours straight and not allowing it to recharge at all. Incidentally, the 1060 mobile GPU itself is limited to 75-80W at maximum power draw, but could be further limited in any individual notebook. The CPU is 45W max. Pretty unlikely that both would be used at 100% for more than a few hours straight, but if you do use it like that, and the result is not enough juice from the adapter, you should be able to observe your battery charge dropping even when plugged in.Last edited: Jul 18, 2017Ellius likes this.

If your worry is that the Aero 15's GPU is being powered below its sweet spot and that you are therefore not getting the 1060 level performance you paid for, that's not something I've seen in any review or benchmark. Meaning, this is not something you need to spend any time worrying about other than for the enthusiast's enjoyment of tweaking their system to get the most from it.
Even in that case, are you sure your usage is going to power limited vs. temp limited? Keep in mind the components we're talking about and the size and thus cooling capacity of the Aero 15.
My "look at the forest" gut reaction is that it's unlikely there's any reasonable upside to be had for buying a new adapter, carrying it's presumably bigger bulk, and subjecting your system to a different input power than it was designed and tested for. Even if that power could be and was used optimally, it's still extra heat and it's related fan noise and possible system longevity issues. And if there was, the extra power would benefit you only in games that couldn't already hit a stable 60 fps on the Aero's 1080p display - but my sense is most games already can.
As to #3, all the comments I've seen here suggest that under-volting is a no lose proposition on its own merits. It won't necessary make your GPU any faster but lower temps are better than higher temps. -
hmm.. does this notebook worth buying ? im thinking to get p950 but since there hard to be found in my country.
im thinking to get aero 15, does this stuff throttle badly ? and does the screen worth the price?
im thinking either aero 15 or GL502vm but since gl502vm are quite old model and gl503 coming this august probably.
or maybe zenbook pro ux550 ?
main usage = rendering and cading. probably some gaming such as overwatchies, darksouls and dota2. -
If the Zenbook 550 has full 4x PCIE Thunderbolt 3, it would pair nicely with an eGPU like the Gigabyte 1070 box. I'm not sure I'd wait for it, though, the Zenbooks seem to take notoroiously long to appear at retailers and some of them haven't been all that well-liked among reviewers. It does look awesome on paper, depending how much they want for it.
-
Looks like they gonna launch it at august in malaysia.
https://www.digitalnewsasia.com/per...ysia-first-country-get-its-new-zenbook-models
And coffeelake also ryzen mobile cpu seems coming hot. ( I dont really hv anyidea about cores and stuffs. I just know that seems like ryzen perform better for multi thread works ? Such as rendering and stuffs ). And what i know that coffee lake release date looks like to be august or september. And we might see it on notebook by end of the year.
Im not really sure how much improvement will it have compare to kaby lake. Since im on my way searching for it hahahaha.

Thanks for the answer guys! My worry is not at default state of the GPU - for that thing the 150W (or whatever limit is on this particular chip in this laptop) is fine. You boos to around 14-1500, sometimes more. Given the good cooling solution I tinkered with OC. If you put +200MHz on core like I did with other 1060s you start to hit 1900-2000MHz. E.g. here MSI GT62VR with 1060 and 225MHz offset hovering right there between 1900-2000. What I get is 1650-1750 generals and a message from afterburner that I'm hitting power limit. So I was trying to figure out if thats because of the brick, or the design. But seems like a design thing
. Shame, it could have handled a bit more juice
. Also, I should add that I like to play with tech - so that's why this interested me - beyond practicality of it.

Different question. I installed the 960 evo today, but encountered a bit of a hick-up. I wanted to put it in the second slot next to the battery, but wasn't sure if I should remove all the black padding there or not? It seems like its there to support the battery so it wont move, but with it inside I dont thing its going to fit. Could any of you who installed a m.2 in there already let me know?
See the pictures bellow: https://ibb.co/bykh5Q . Should I: 1) Remove the red part only, 2) remove both red and green part, 3) Leave both of them in and try to put it in as is?
Also a quick side question - both of the slots should be identical in performance right?
Thanks a lot! -
If you are overclocking and/or boosting core voltages, I think you are more likely to have throttling because the cooling in a thin and light notebook is insufficient. The power supply is probably a much smaller concern;-) Before buying a new adapter, just do the check I mentioned and see if the battery level is slowly decreasing even while plugged in.Ellius likes this.
-
You have to pull that padding out, the card plus a thin lining of padding will keep it in place
Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk -
Thanks - so essentially keep the thin line padding in between the batery and a drive but the thick one out?
One more - I promise for now last question. I'm a bit of perfectionist so I got some 3000MHz RAM ( http://www.corsair.com/en-gb/vengea...-3000mhz-cl16-memory-kit-cmsx16gx4m2a3000c16\). After plugging it in, it unfortunately runs at its highest non-XMP setting i.e. 2666MHz. See here: https://ibb.co/bNX7Pk. I tried looking for XMP enable option in BIOS, but no luck.
Did anybody here got it to work? Or knows how to make XMP run properly? I dont think there is a way to do it other then BIOS thoughbberry110 likes this. -
I have an orange model being built no. Should get it in a few weeks. I know dell laptops all have a heat spreader or something for when pcie ssds are used. is that a bunch on nonsense? should i case that the aero doesnt have that?
-
So the power brick for the Aero 15 really adds a bit of weight and bulk to it. While it's not particularly thick, it is still noticeable and I found myself displeased having to shove it into my carry bag to take to and from work with me.
I recently ordered a spare adapter from HIDEvolution, with the help of @Donald@HIDevolution and it arrived today. Good service, fast half-way-around-the-world shipping, and well-packed, and most importantly, fully functional.
I'll be testing how much more 'noticable' it is to not carry the power brick today when I bring the laptop home from work and report back. I'm not sure if this is an issue for most people, but given that I travel a long way everyday on public transport, half of it standing, (so I can't just put the bag on the passenger seat), I'm expecting it to make a difference for my particular use case.agent_pires likes this. -
Just got my Aero 15 in yesterday and I have a few concerns. The biggest is that the battery will max out charge at 96%. Was it like this for any of you? The second concern is that the GPU runs at 86 C while gaming, which seems to be quite a bit higher than I was expecting based on the reviews I've watched and read that show much lower GPU temps. It's also a repasted version from HIDevo so that adds to the concern about the higher temp. My last issue is of course quite a bit of back light bleed.
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
It is normal for the battery to stop charging anywhere from about 92%. It is the same for all laptops, so nothing to worry about.
For your other issues, please contact HIDevolution Support Team. If you will PM me with your name and location, I can give you the proper instructions to contact them. -
Thanks for the response! I did contact support and was able to get the battery fully charged to 100. Also, I was able to get the temps down with a bit of adjustment to the games I was playing, so that was for sure user error
. The light bleed of course remains, but I'm just not sure it would be worth going through a RMA process for. Thanks for the help.

Same here. When on battery and a battery saver option kicks in, the backlight brightness is reduced and then -sometimes - there's massive backlight bleed visible along the bottom edge of the display. It looks like every other backlight LED is set to a higher brightness level, see this picture:
Simply increasing the backlight and reducing it again (e.g., by changing auto brightness offset in Smart Manager) switches all LEDs to the same brightness level and removes the backlight bleeding, see here:

Hi,
I would like to know if the adapter you ordered is the same as the original or you managed to get a slimmer one?
Cheers -
After coming from my Sager, this power brick is literally half the size. I was pleasantly surprised on that front.

Are there any news on applying Creators Update to the Aero 15? The last reports were not positive (BSODs, corrupted recovery partition). Therefore I'm holding off on upgrading.
-
I received the Creators Update through standard windows update process. My machine did begin having lockups soon after. I did the file system check/repair and once that completed haven't had them since. I have no proof that any of those three things are related to one another or would be the same for anyone else.
Gigabyte has a fix for the recovery partition issue posted on their website.HermannnTheGerman likes this. -
Can someone comment on speaker quality? Is it better than XPS 15?
-
I don't know how it compares to the XPS 15 ( @Eason would definitely be able to make that comparison), but they are probably one of the worst aspects of the notebook, which, all things considered, isn't all that bad.
I'd say they get quite loud but are very very tinny and get a little distorted at the louder volumes. -
Yeah I'd say XPS 15's is a bit better. I wouldn't buy either laptop for the music quality, though.
-
Did the keyboard issue ever get fixed with key combos not registering?
-
My impression is that some issues were fixed, but others are not likely to be fixed. Hopefully someone can comment on the limitations that remain. You can still use the programmable feature to assign combos to unused fn, numpad or other keys if needed.brucek2 and Donald@Paladin44 like this.
-
The issue is likely just the way they wired up the keyboard. Microsoft has a really good explanation of the issue but basically to save money keyboards usually don't have individual wiring to all the keys, so some combinations can't be read. It is an actual hardware limitation. Good gamer keyboards are setup to have no ghosting at all, anywhere, but consumer keyboards often still have issues. Gigabyte seems to have done a particularly noticeably bad job with the matrix on their keyboard. So there's stuff that couldn't be solved without a hardware change.
The annoying thing is that they spent the money to individually wire up all the keys for lighting, rather than key response. While per-key lighting is cool, I'd much rather have a keyboard with no ghosting.brucek2 and Donald@Paladin44 like this. -
...especially from a company that makes gaming mechanical keyboard that don't suffer from ghosting

I have one of these Aero 15 units in hand and have experienced the keyboard combos not registering already. Right Ctrl + Right Shift + arrows doesn't work to highlight text, nor the Left keys. And Left Ctrl + Left Shift + N doesn't work to create a folder, but the Right Ctrl + Right Shift + N does. Odd. I will try to see if I can get an answer from Gigabyte as to whether it can/will be resolved.
Otherwise this seems to be a pretty solid quality unit.

A time-honored case of right-hand--left-hand in a big company?
Who would have thunk it...
How do you feel about the stiffness of the keyboard? After over a month of owning this unit, I still find it unnecessarily stiff and difficult to type on. It's probably my one major gripe with the unit. -
How stiff is it compared to something like a cherry mx brown switch?
-
I prefer a stiff one over a bender, anytime.

I don't know the exact behaviour of ctrl-shift-arrow shortcuts, but I believe that ctrl-shift-arrow left/right should highlight "wordwise" and up/down highlight to the beginning/end of paragraph/line.
With that said, on my Aero 15 (Fusion V4.2.0, firmware 1.1.8)
- wordwise highlighting works except for right hand control-shift-left (not registered at all)
- beginning/end highlighting works except for left hand control-shift-down (registers as c-s-up).
I hope Gigabyte can resolve the remaining keyboard issues via software update. -

Thanks for the feedback. I'll have to check my BIOS version and possibly update, it sounds like.

Hey guys I'm really curious how you can get the full battery life out of this laptop? I've had it open with a pdf viewer, chrome and slack on power saver with brightness lowered and it barely lasted 2 hours. What the hell is the secret?
-
Sounds like it could be a defective battery. Or maybe something in the background running up CPU/GPU power consumption, but you could probably detect that with a monitoring app.
Even on full brightness, you should get 3-4+ hours with nothing intensive running. On lower brightness, using Edge and just surfing or whatever, it should get the 6-8 hrs. most owners and reviewers seem to get. -
Yea I filed a technical support ticket with Gigabyte, will keep you posted on it. Thanks for the quick reply, will keep ya posted!

Got a unit from Amazon...it came with fingerprints all over the screen, a dead battery, and scuffed rubber 'feet'. But the anti-tamper 'void' sticker on the box was not broken!
Gigabyte/Amazon shipping used/refurbished units as new? Anyone else have this experience? Just really surprised to see this from Amazon on a $2k laptop. -
Easy to return with amazon. But if you got one with a good display and no other issues it might be worth keeping. Sounds odd though, was the paperwork and other stuff all sealed?
-
I'm crossing fingers that the 4K version comes with the keyboard all fixed. Might be wishful thinking but a good opportunity to fix one of the most common gripes on this machine.

Just wondering if any Aero 15 owners could answer this for me. Why is the battery life less than the Razer blade? Shouldn't it be more with it's larger 94W battery? How long does it last watching downloaded movies? Thanks, Cheers!
-
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
FYI I updated the firmware for the keyboard via the Gigabyte Fusion app, and that has fixed all my keyboard shortcut problems.
I'm also not seeing very good battery life. I watched a 480p video on the Aero 15 with 50% display brightness, and the battery was down to 5 percent after 4 hours. Given the 94 watt-hour battery, that just doesn't make sense, the runtime should be much longer. I even had the keyboard backlighting turned off. I ran my test multiple times with the same settings I test all my laptops.

Thanks for the quick response! That's so weird. I still want this laptop, but hesitate on the purchase because the battery life estimates are all around. Do you have the latest bios? -
There was is an review in a german magazine. They compared different thin 15" laptops and the Aero 15 has the worst idle energy consumption. 9,7W in idle, twice as much as the XPS 15. Thag explains the mediocre battery life.
-
Got my Aero 15 yesterday and it's a solid machine! Very impressed. Uninstalled most of the software that was on it, but the amount of bloat ware wasn't too bad in my opinion.
Just four questions:
- I have a device with an ! In device manager "Unknown USB Device (Link in Compliance Mode)". Any ideas what this is and how to fix? I've done all the udpates
- Anyone tried with with TB3 eGPU? I have a spare GTX 1080 and a 3440x1440 monitor I'd like to game on some. I can get the new HP one here in the UK.
- Does this need a laptop cooler at all? I am talking about a closed-lid scenario on a desk when using external monitor and gaming. I have something that keeps it off the desk about 10cm, anyway, which will help with airflow.
- Is there anything I should check about the display? It seems fine and I don't have any dead or stuck pixels.
