the 8600gt is more of a high-end card where as the 8400GS is a mid range card.
you can find more about mobile video cards in this thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=39568 -
The 8600m kills the 8400m. Memory is not what you should judge a GPU on.

thxs alot, will a 1.6ghz procesor play games well with it?

OK 8400m GS vs 8600m GT, where to start? 8600 is a class above 8400 so that is a tip off. 8400 is GS 8600 is GT sort of a level above.
Here is a link for 8600m GT.
Here is a link for 8400m GS.
So the two series (86/84) plus level (GT/GS) it is a big difference but other than games might not matter.
For games the GPU is what matters not Intel vs AMD for almost all games. -
When talking about DELL 8600M GT cards, remember that Vostro and Inspirons have DDR2 version, only XPS M1530 has the true DDR3 version (difference in performance is roughly 25%). But still, even the DDR2 version of 8600M GT is much faster than DDR3 version of 8400M GS.
Generally: 8600M GT > 8600M GS >> 8400M GS > 8400M G -
