    hey, i have been checking out some hp and dell laptops lately and have come acroos 256mb video cards that some of thier laptops offer..
    Hp ofers 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS whilst dell offers 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600m Gt
    could every one tell me which graphics card is better and why?pls

    The 8600m kills the 8400m. Memory is not what you should judge a GPU on.

    any core 2 duo out there will easily handle the latest games and games to come.

    Just for the record, any AMD dual core will work just fine for the question asked.

    OK 8400m GS vs 8600m GT, where to start? 8600 is a class above 8400 so that is a tip off. 8400 is GS 8600 is GT sort of a level above.

    So the two series (86/84) plus level (GT/GS) it is a big difference but other than games might not matter.

    For games the GPU is what matters not Intel vs AMD for almost all games.

    When talking about DELL 8600M GT cards, remember that Vostro and Inspirons have DDR2 version, only XPS M1530 has the true DDR3 version (difference in performance is roughly 25%). But still, even the DDR2 version of 8600M GT is much faster than DDR3 version of 8400M GS.

    Generally: 8600M GT > 8600M GS >> 8400M GS > 8400M G
