how much does 1 gb stick of ram cost? I am thinking of getting a laptop with 1 gb of ram and if i need to later on, get up to 2 gb. Would i be better off just getting 2gb to start off with.

With $94~$99, you will get 667 DDR2 and works of luck. Good brand goes with ~$120.

Your cost will depend on the following factors at the time of your purchase:

Market demand for the type of RAMS (The higher the demand, the higher the price, just like crude oil derived products)

The particular type of Ram required by your future laptop.

A suggestion to you if you plan on upgrading after the purchase, try to buy the laptop configured with 1GB of Ram on 1 board/dimm leaving you with an open Dimm socket for your additional 1GB of Ram you plan to purchase.

Or take the easy route and get the laptop pre-configured with 2 GB.

If the laptop you buy is configured with 1GB ( 2 X 512Mb Dimms) you will have to remove those and buy 2 X 1GB Dimms to upgrade making a very expensive upgrade when you figure in the price you already paid for those 512MB Dimms when you purchase your laptop.
