The 250GB 7K320 (Hitachi) doesn't seem to be so fast (well, it is fast in comparison to the 320GB/160GB 7K320).... Linky.
Probably because of the different configuration of 2 Disks/4 Heads for the 250GB version.

Well, the 250GB doesn't seem to be slow, as stated before. (And its also cheap !!)

 

Lol the 7200.3 250GB is faster than the 320GB.

5400.5 has terrible acces times and is better to be avoided.

 

Yeah, I wasn't expecting it to be faster, but to be very close/identical in performance.

The WD2500BEVS/WD3200BEVT case is different, as they do not belong to the same generation/family.

The 250GB & 320GB Seagate 5400.5/Hitachi 5K320/7K320, are also very close in performance.

So, it depends upon, what drive (160/250/320GB) one can get at a good price.

I believe it is due to the low access times, that the 5400.5 has a lower power consumption. Though the performance hit shouldn't be huge !!

(BTW the HM251JJ/HM250JJ is 125GB per disk --> Probably 2 Disk|4 Heads)

 

I think you're right about the 160/250/320. It doesn't really matter.

But the performance hit of a 22ms acces time is quite big. You'll see it perform bad in non synthetic benchmarks, I'm pretty sure of that.

Maybe it can be blaimed on it being an early model and Seagate will improve the 5400.5 in later firmwares. Like they seem to have done with the 7200.3.

 

To be honest the performance difference between my 7.2k 160GB in my dell vs the 250GB 5.4k is barely negligible. But I would love a 7.2k 320GB x2 for the dell for storing some movies and load everyone of my games, as this setup has lasted the longest without a reformat (4 months and counting).

Thats not what i was saying. I said that I wanted to upgrade my HDD (just a want that wont ever happen) so I could start storing some movies and load more games on my dell. I reformat once ever so often (usually once every 1-3 months) because Im a neat freak and actually enjoy formatting my PC and trying a totally different approach to setting up my OS. When I remove a game(s) I just use CCleaner and defrag then call it a day. I hope that cleared things up a bit.
