I have a brand new samsung notebook with 8GB ram installed. Out of curiosity I removed the bottom panel, removed a memory card and put it back harmlessly. However after I booted back I am finding that the usable amount of RAM is only 7.16 GB (7331 MB) in windows. I do not remember how much was usable earlier. Is it possible that this is normal or that I have blown up a RAM chip. ??

If the chip was faulty you would get errors, lock ups, or not boot at all. The portion of RAM not accounted for is likely being reserved by your integrated video card.

thanks for the reply HTWingNut. I swapped the RAM cards and now I am having 8089 MB (7.90 GB) again. Is the integrated memory RAM dynamically allocated ??

Hope you're removing your battery/power adaptor while you're switching/playing with your Sodimms; you may find out how easy it is to burn out your motherboard.

Yes. Sometimes you can adjust it in the BIOS to dynamic or a fixed size. Otherwise it's just dynamic.

^^ But I dont see an option in bios to adjust. Intel Graphics control panel shows about 130MB of allocation as current and 1650 MB as maximum

Intel's drivers allocate video as they see fit; I'm pretty sure you won't be presented with any options to alter it yourself.
