    Hi,

I'm new here, so if this thread is in the wrong forum, just move it to an appropriate location plz? TY

Ok, on to the problem. I have a Sony Vaio VGN SZ140, and the screen looks like this:

    A. I don't know if the problem is in the lcd itself or elsewhere. Is there a way for me to test this?
    B. If I wanted to replace the lcd myself, where would be the best place to get parts for it?
    C. Anything else I should know before I tear this laptop apart?

    Thank you SOOO much

I'll leave final diagnosis to the true experts, but that looks like a video card on its way out. What kind of picture do you get if you hook up an external monitor?

If you get proper picture on an external, then it is a problem with the built in LCD. If the external looks the same, then I would say it's a video card issue. Did you do any driver updates before this occurred? What video card is this machine running? It might be something as simple as a loose ribbon cable, too.

First thing I would do (because it is easy) is hook up the external.

    hi,

    ty for the reply.

i did connect to an external monitor and also checked my screen via prntscrn (if that's any useful) and found no problems with either test.

so i'm a little more certain now that it's an lcd problem, but i'm still wondering if this could be caused by connection problems rather than the lcd itself. i'm 90% certain it's the lcd, though.

    ty

If the display is fine on an external, then it is, as you suspect, either a connection or a panel problem. I would ensure that the connections are fine, first, before you buy anything.

You should look into the Sony forum, you'll get more model specific help there. :)

    Best of luck!

PS: Here's a pdf disassembly guide for your model. :)
