[REQUEST] Fujitsu XI1554 disable bios limit 2GB RAM

Hi all,

Laptop Fujitsu XI1554 is set by the manufacturer in bios limit memory 2GB RAM. This laptop has Phoenix bios. Chipset this laptop Intel 945PM in hardware support 4GB RAM. Also Fujitsu XI1554 bios support NVIDIA and ATI graphics card. Currently I have in this laptop NVIDIA graphics card.

I found on the internet that laptop Fujitsu XI1554 is exactly the same Alienware m5750 and Alienware m5790. Alienware m5750 and m5790 in bios support 4GB RAM. Unfortunately Alienware m5750 and m5790 in bios support only ATI graphics card.

I have a request - could someone unlock in Fujitsu bios 4GB RAM support???

Have you actually tried 4GB RAM in the system? The limitation may not be in the BIOS at all?

 

As Above, the bios may be ok with the 4GB just that the OEM has not listed it. The other issue will be your OS. If it is a 32 bit OS then you may only see 3.0-3.5 GB of ram.

 

The limitation is in the BIOS. I have 64 bit OS.

I think he was looking for further information as in how was this tested and what results were found? specifically did you place in 2x2MB sticks to find the bios reported how much ram was reported by bios and OS. If it did not boot at all did you try resetting the ram? even if it did boot did you try resetting the ram?
The reason is the OEM rarely moves the bios hole default from where the stock bios indicates it before customization. So it is usually where Intel specifies it, and this would yield your 4GB.
Even someone who can mod your bios, especially as they would be doing this in the blind, would want to see what your system does with 2x2mb sticks.

On Fujitsu bios with 2x2GB RAM laptop doesn't start (resets all the time) - start only with 1x2GB RAM.

On Alienware bios with 2x2GB RAM laptop start normally.

I have 64-bit OS.

Oooops, my bad 2x2GB. Resets In or before bios or makes it too OS and reboots?

if it goes to bios and does a ram check there could be where the hardware hole is before the 4GB limit. It could also be where the system chipset can not use the specific two sticks. When you have 2x2GB you are in synchronous dual channel. The timings and more importantly command rate (1T vs. 2T) can cause compatibility issues. if it works 1x2GB then apparently 3GB is ok but then you are in asynchronous dual channel mode.

To be sure, other than command rate, is not an issue on the timing does the system boot with just one stick of 2GB ram? now the other timing rates could still be an issue but if it boots with one stick of just the 2GB this scenario is much less likely. What also happens if there are two unmatched sticks is the SPD timing of the slower ram is what the system will usually use and because they are unmatched usually the system reverts too 2T.

You should then ask, anyone familiar with the bios, to look to see if the hardware had been brought to below the 4GB chipset ceiling.

Notebook Fujitsu XI1554 is exactly the same Alienware m5750 and Alienware m5790.
The company Fujitsu set the bios XI1554 lock on the memory - max to use 2GB RAM (no matter combination 1x2GB or 2x1GB).
The company Alienware isn't set the bios m5750 and m5790 lock on the memory - max to use 4GB RAM in combination 2x2GB.
Notebooks Alienware and Fujitsu have chipset Intel 945PM. 945PM in hardware support max 4GB RAM in combination 2x2GB. Chip specification:

I don't use Alienware bios in XI1554 because currently I have in this laptop NVIDIA graphics card. Unfortunately Alienware bios support only ATI graphics card.

Summarizing, no matter memory type (I use ddr2 667), work mode, channel, timings, etc. Problem is only limit max 2GB memory in Fujitsu bios set by Fujitsu company.

Ok so with 2x1GB sticks it boots but both the bios and OS report only 2GB?

 

When I use 2x1GB RAM, Fujitsu bios and OS reports 2GB RAM.
When I use 2x2GB RAM, Fujitsu bios and OS nothing reports because notebook resets all the time.

Yea, 2x1 reporting as 2GB is the hardware being addressed too early. There are few, if any, people here that frequent the board that are bios modders. Techinferno is a more likely place to find someone. Good luck on the quest, be sure to let however know about your last post as it will tell them about the hardware hole.

 

Yeah good luck finding any solution for this 2007 laptop... Honestly, why are you even bothering?

You will need to flash the Alienware BIOS for that same model. It's the same hardware, just no limitations on the memory.

The Alienware BIOS wich works with 4GB will only work with AMD (ATi) Graphics card. This is the OP's main problem!

Let me have a go at the BIOS and see if there is anything I can find that would limit the RAM capacity.

Although, It looks like the motherboard supports standard MXM 2.1 Cards.
So you could easily switch over to an ATI variant pretty cheap, and flash the Alienware Bios.

Only x1800, x1900 and the 3650 is supported on the ATi side. As for nVidia it works with the 8600m gs/gt or the 8700m gt. With the latest Alienware BIOS it boots up with the 9700m GT but it beeps like crazy every time you power up the thing. I used to have the older brother the Xi1546 with 4gb of ram (Alienware bios) and the stock x1800 overclocked to hell... until it fried itself.

 

Unfortunately Alienware bios support only ATI graphics card. Currently I have in Amilo XI1554 laptop NVIDIA graphics card.

For information Amilo XA1526 laptop is AMD platform, Amilo XI1554 laptop is INTEL platform.
