[Thermal Paste] Applied, Results! (5920G)

First of all, excuse my bad English please, I'm dutch (lol).

YES! I've actually done it!

I've spend the last.. 5-6 hours on applying the paste etc. -.-

(Yes im excited haha, i was verry scared things would go wrong)

Anyway, i've applied some onto my cpu and gpu. The cpu was a pain in the cause at first one of the screws of the heatsink 'broke' ( the screwdriver wouldn't hold grip, idk how to explain) so i tried to do it with a Plier... This didn't work cause i didn't have enough space to move anything, so it turned out that i disassebled my WHOLE laptop, every single piece, from lcd screen to ram memory, EVERYTHING, just to take my heatsink out. O_O
I had to re-open my lappy like 2-3 times cause i just forgot to reasseble small things like clables onto the motherboard etc.
Now, i still have 5-6 screws left, and i have no idea where they came from

In total: A BIG PAIN IN THE .

The results:

Well, im running orthros for 30 minutes now and my cpu has a temperature of 61 degrees celcius. Now you might think, " dude thats still hot", think again, concidering i had a max temp of 92 degrees c BEFORE modifying anything! So afther undervolting, cleaning my heatsink and fans i get a total drop of 31 degrees celcius.

EDIT:
I've just stressed my cpu by playing prototype for a while at max settings. and anti aliasing x4. My max temp was 80 degrees celcius, now this is still hot, but if you know my previous max was 97 this is an amazing result for just replacing the thermal paste!

Those who know the Aspire 5920G will know it runs verry hot, especially when stressed. So i'm happy with the results.

Now i'd like you guys' oppinion!

Do you think i did a good job? Are the results normal? Will temperatures keep on dropping as i heat-cool-it a few times? (the so called 'curing' or what?)

P.S.: is it normal that i smell some weird chemical stuff? O.O cause its a weird smell and not one i'm comfortable with.. O well I guess it'll go away...

Paste used:
Innovative Cooling Diamond.
(preheated before applying: 5 minutes in 60-70 degrees water to make it less solid.)

Nice mod by the way any change in temperature (lower) is a good result.
Now you max temp under stress is 17 degrees C lower that alone is a good mod in it self. Well done on your mod, the smell is more likely the fumes coming off the paste and not your workmanship (wire's shorting out hell noooooooooooo!)
Maybe by next week temps be lower... curing time etc etc.

 

thanks, and i might even re-do the thermal paste, as now i perfectly know how my machine is built and how I should perfectly apply the paste. My idles are still pretty high, but lower then before. (57°c-60°c)
I'm trying to find away to cool my gpu down even more

Please post some pics of the thermal paste on how you did it. It would help out some NBR members.

 

Problem is, I didn't have any decent camera at the time of applying (neither did i have the time). I'm opening up soon to check things and propably re-aplying onto gpu, as now i get temperatures up to 88 degrees. (sigh.)

I'll make some pics with my mobile and post em if you like.

 

That would be nice, it would even be better to post a video.

Hey mate, nice to see those results. I was more than happy when I did this long time ago. Just a little hint from me - there is no need to disassemble your whole lappy in order to remove the heatsink. All you have to do is - unscrew all the screws on the heatsink, than in the battery compartment unscrew the closest to the heatsink screw and all you have to do now is to lift the battery compartment a bit. There you go, now there is enough space to slide your heatsink Be careful though, make sure that you have lifted it a bit, because you can scratch the CPU I love how easy is to get under the hood of 5920 Also you can try to undervolt both your CPU and your GPU, there is huge improvement and it costs nothing

 

I too applied thermal paste to the 6920G - it's not helping the CPU so much (typical 6920G throttling woes), but the GPU is incredibly cool-running since. Low 50s on Power Saver on battery, idles on AC in the high 50s/low 60s, and the most I've seen after gaming is around 78.

 

I had to open up the whole thing cause one of the screws is screwed my screwdriver doesn't have any grip on it, so i tried with a plier etc etc..

And undervolting GPU? i'm already undervolting CPU, but i didn't know gpu was possible :O Can you inform me about that?

I've got the same as your gpu.. My max was about 77 when i was playing css for like an hour or so (verry intensive, max settings)
When i play wow on max setting or Prototype, i usually get up to 85 max (had 97 max before applying paste)

I'm trying to cool my gpu a little more cause i always have 60-65 idle temp which can't be healthy..

P.S. I ordered the NZXT Cryo LX (laptop cooler, most expensive atm omg -.-) Hope that will help too.

It would I'm using Notepal Infinite and chills my lappy pretty good, but I still think that for a hot summer NZXT Cryo LX would be better Maybe I'll buy a NZXT Cryo LX and use it only when my laptop is placed on the desk and my Infinite for everywhere else (because it has no sharp edges).

 

I have, and what i understand of it is that it's verry risky, voids warranty and comes with alot of work.. (Most of it I dont even understand..)

Anyway, it would be nice if you could post some results on 'undervolting' the gpu.. like before/afther pics etc (if you have them )

Well, I don't have pics, sorry. But I can tell you the GPU temps (all of them are with my Notepal Infinite at highest speed) - 85ºC (under load, copper mod, OCed, non UVed), 78ºC (under load, copper mod, non OCed, non UVed), 70º (under load, copper mod, non OCed, UVed). The vBIOS flashing is nothing scary, you can always fix it (correct me if I'm wrong), even if you mess-up everything. The laptop's BIOS is a bit scary for flashing

 

Fact is that i've tried flashing my gpu before, and when the flash said to be 'succesful' nothing actually changed when i checked with GPU-Z..

So i'm not quite sure if i'll try that again.. Maybe if i know what I did wrong before and if i get more info on undervolting.. This seems pretty intresting tho cause your temps show a remarcable drop!

There has to be an easier way to undervolt your gpu without the dangers.

 

AFAIK mobile GPUs doesn't support software undervolting, I could be wrong though.

 

I might order another one later on (gpu) so i dont mind about temps right now
