I wanted an external HDD so I've boughted an esata/usb to sata 2.5" enclosure to put a disk on it.
I already had a disk I wanted to use. An WD 320gb 7200rpm.
I deleted all the information on the disk. so to make sure I really deleted all the informations I've written all zero's on the disk.

Of course now when I connect the disk to my pc it's not recognized because it doesn't have a file system. on esata it doesn't work. on USB the pc recognizes a device but it doesn't work.
My question is how to format the HDD. I don't have a drive "letter" to format or anything...

Shouldn't you be able to just go to disk management, select it, and then format/partition/assign a drive letter from there?

Yeah right click on My Computer, manage and go to disk management.

Have you assigned it a drive letter yet, partitioned and formatted it yet?

yeah disk management worked. it's the only way. the volume was recognized so I was capable of making a partition and formatting and even selecting the file system and cluster size I wanted.
I tried this once but didn't worked. I understand now that was because of an unrelated problem because the usb port wasn't providing enough power to the HDD, so I couldn't see the volume.
    anyway, fixed!
