I pulled the trigger on the y550 custom build and got the 4GB RAM and 64-bit vista. I was wondering if I should downgrade to the 1x1 and get 2X2 off of newegg. The only reason I'd get it from newegg is if I could upgrade to 1366MHz.
So my questions are:
Can a notebook normally supplied with PC3-8500 DDR3 1066MHz support PC3-10666 DDR3 1366MHz? And would I see much of a difference between 4GB 1066MHz vs 4GB 1366MHz?
I can get then both for about ~$70.

Please excuse my ignorance, I am a notebook noob, just bought my first laptop after hours of research and decided y550 was the best deal.

Depends on the Chipset whether its supported.
I doubt you'd see the difference though.
Maybe some applications that depend heavily on fast RAM - but normal use, definitely not.
But post your chipset. -
I think it's either the Mobile IntelĀ® PM45 Express Chipset or Mobile IntelĀ® GM45 Express Chipset because they're the only ones compatible with c2d p8700

Doesn't quite help - any exprts around?

No the chipset doesn't support it. The 1366Mhz ram will auto downclock to 1066. Don't bother.
-
Even if it did support it, you would see no real life performance benefit anyways.

alright i'll stick with the 4GB from lenovo, thanks for the help guys.

No if the board did accept it, it would scale the RAM's speed down to 1066MHz. Not to mention your CPU's FSB is 1066MHz (guessing if you got a Core2 Duo) and can not use the speed of RAM above 1066MHz.
Also be sure to keep your RAM in dual channel mode.
