    Hey all, Great site

    Quick ?

Just bought this off a friend who hardly used it

Since its the hardware section, I figure you guys could help

As you can see Im running my audio setup into a stereo receiver from the headphone jack (not that these altec lansing speakers dont kick ) but we can all understand, right?

So my question is, Is there any way to relocate or run an alternative audio setup through any other method?

Or am I stuck w/ this? It is not very annoying, but more visually annoying...

    Thanks !!

Also, My n/b is running a bit hot... And I cant figure out how to turn the fans on or speed them up w/ Speedfan.....

    here is a screen shot...

I am yet to clean the dusted fan port , But will it cool everything down when I do ?

believe it or not, just keeping my n/b elevated w/ an object cools it down a few degrees as well.

I was thinking about leaving the hard drives alone and opting for an external to save some $..... (for movies music etc) so that I can upgrade the Ram to 3gb = Originally wanted to up to 4gb but the computer guy by me said to just stick upgrade to 3 bc it would be a waste (bc of 32 bit vista??? is my guess)

Do you recommend a processor upgrade ? Is it worth it? Ive seen another hp dv9 @ 2.5GHZ but I think shes fast enough for now

    what would you upgrade?

    Thanks!!!!!!!

Those temps looks rather normal if you just played a game and those are your temps.

For the audio setup. Look for a L-shaped 3.5mm plug to whatever you have connected there, and realign the cable along the notebook's frontside and one of the other sides so it comes out the back.

I see, Actually, I didnt finish playing a game, rather the computer being on all day ....

Excuse me for my noobness, but would i go to radioshack, ask for a L shaped 3.5mm jack- then run this bulky adapter into it?

Does the L piece come w/ a wire that I can route? Since this "head" is thick, i cant really get around it , huh unless i use a wire that can move the connection point

    Can I use this???

Its for a phone, but this idea would be perfect for audio thru the usb.... IS that possible?

    Usb would be best......

Please do not cross post or talk about piracy. They are both against the forum rules.

If you want to properly relocate your sound, buy yourself a Creative X-Fi expresscard sound card. HP has placed it on a very poor location.

32bit Vista can only address 3gb~ maximum, so yes its not necessary to upgrade to 4gb unless you want to future proof.

Speedfan only works for desktop. Theres no way to manually control the fans. The fan algorithm is hard coded into the BIOS. Try cleaning out the fans first, its probably clogged with dust.

What CPU do you currently have installed?

Yes, you should be able to find an L-shaped with a cord that you can route out the back, and then connect your cable that you have on it.

And no you cannot use that one that you linked to, that's something completely different. To get sound via USB you have to get a usb-soundcard, and they usualy suck, hard. If you're not getting the real thing.
Creative has a x-fi usb soundcard for 50bucks, maybe that could be something for you.

    Thx, I see.

I was watching this video review on the soundcard
    http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/01/03/review_video_creative_xfi/

They werent too fond of it - Also, If I use my express slot, It would get in the way of my mouse area (right side)

Looks like my only option is to re route the stock location thru the L piece (unless I can find a quality USB sound card...)

    Thx

The express card slot on the dv2000/6000 are on the opposite side, bad luck for you eh. What about the USB x-fi's?

What about a bluetooth headset? That will get rid of all the wires overall.

As for the CPU heres your choices (clock/l2 cache/FSB):

You could always buy the HP quick dock and set it behind it with all your peripherals plugged into it then you just connect to the expansion port on the right side of your laptop.

Dv6000's have their expresscard on the right side they use the exact same motherboard as dv9000's

Oh right, i was thinking of the dv5.

But yes, i use the quickdock aswell to avoid using the front audio jacks. It is a great investment.

    Hm.......

I see.. Well i hardly take the laptop around, Not too easy w/ a 17" even though its not that heavy and is slim so the dock may be a good idea

Ill try to find a more simple alternative and then it all fails, go for that dock

I just like to keep the area neat and least visible and I think the dock is a bit

But on ebay, for 42 shipped, They have an "open box" special on the dock and the seller has a great rep

Flip, For the upgrade, Naturally Id want the fastest one but are the price ranges from the 7200 to the 7600 heavy?

I know that in the computer world, how it looks on paper isnt always the best route.

What would you recommend in a reasonable price range? (i.e. few hundred $ installed)

To be honest with you the performance difference between a T5500 and a T7400 is really not worth the $$$. You will be looking at about $70-170. Watch the NBR marketplace for good sales, some sell it under $100.

If your a gamer or you use cpu intensive applications like encoding, then a faster CPU will be worth it. For general applications like firefox, winamp, chatting, etc the performance difference is very small to none.

Upgrade the RAM first, and maybe a faster HD (320gb 7200rpm or SSD)

I got an upgrade from T5600 (1.83GHz/2MB) to T7600 (2.33GHz/4MB) for $60, and i can say, for $60 it was worth it without a doubt. Before that bargain i thought about paying up to $300 for an upgrade, but i see now, that i would never in my life give more than $120 for an upgrade like that. I actually bought the CPU for $120, but i sold the t5600 for $60 so... :)

I can't feel any difference in games or such, only time is when i am decoding/encoding DVD's, takes lot less time. And strange enough it actually runs a little cooler.
