I was very pleasantly surprised to see that HP has some models with all the memory in 1 DIMM - e.g. the g6t:

HP Pavilion g6 and g6t series | HP Official Store

So that means that I can at any time add 1 DIMM to increase memory, right?

Also, are there many other manufacturers who are doing the same thing now? It seems for years the situation had been that to increase RAM you had to discard the old RAM because there were no empty slots.

    Thanks.

It really depends on the model, I remember Sony had a couple of high-end models coming with only one 4GB dimm and the second slot left available.

Thanks, Thierry. I just stumbled on another with 1 DIMM, the Dell Latitude E6420 XFR, on sale at ~ $5,000

Yep, $5,000 is correct - it's the armored kind. But maybe Dell has the option of 1 DIMM in other models, I'll check tomorrow.

Dell has the one DIMM option for many of the models in the business and consumer class. Sony had it too the last I checked on the F and Z series

Clevo has this option in some of their laptops too - 8GB in 2 DIMMs with the other 2 slots empty.

I usually just buy with cheapest RAM option and buy my own since 8GB RAM is so darn cheap anyhow.

Yes, the Sony SA series laptops (13.3") have this configuration of 4GB onboard, and one free DIMM slot.

To be honest, the 1 DIMM slot configuration doesn't matter all that much. RAM is so cheap that it is almost irrelevant if you need to throw away whatever is currently installed in your system. And RAM performance has so little practical impact on the overall system performance, that it doesn't matter what RAM speed, timings, or single / dual channel mode operation you have.

Most laptops where one module is soldered into the mobo while the other is a standard slot come with all the RAM on a single module. Additionally, the majority of business class notebooks and a significant number of (usual higher end/gaming) consumer notebooks also offer a configuration option allowing for this.

Usually cheap/economy and some sub-notebook type laptops have only a single SODIMM slot. In many cases such as in netbooks this is actually soldered onto its motherboard so there isn't a slot per se but rather the memory is already on the motherboard. In other cases you get this but with a free remaining slot for upgrade purposes.
