Looking at purchasing either the D630 or T61.
D630 comes with 2x512 MB by default and has 2 slots. T61 comes with 1x1 GB by default and has 2 slots.
I want 2 GB RAM for either laptops. Should I configure them so that they come with one 2 GB DIMM for future consideration? Or should I just configure them with just one 1 GB DIMM and buy the additional 1 GB somewhere else?

You will probably get a bit of a drop in memory bandwidth using just one module. The cheapest solution is likely to be to buy the notebook with 1 x 1GB and add a 1GB or 2GB module bought from elsewhere.

It costs me only $50 to upgrade from 1gb to 2gb with HP, but I'm not gonna do it because i can get a single 2gb stick fro only $60! then later down the road I can upgrade to 4gb =)
