Well, to give you somewhat of a crude idea, when my laptop boots up, it shows about a 512mb RAM usage. Vista requires 512 to run, and reccommends 1gig.

with 1.5 gigs you shouldnt be too bad off. I would consider the 2 gig upgrade at some point, but it shouldnt be needed right now.

My advice to you is NOT to use Vista for gaming. You will get less perfomance out of your system, because more of its resources are used for the OS itself.

It'll take another six months or so before Vista becomes better in running games (at least doing so efficiently). If you browse around you'll see that this has been substantiated in extensive game comparisons. The results are very clear (maybe so unfortunately because Vista is pretty slik ;))

I found Counter-Strike: Source to have a minimal performance decrease under Vista, see this review's performance section:
    http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3507&review=Asus+Z84Jp

Ideally, you want to have 2GB of RAM if you want to game under Vista. I found that Vista uses about 500 - 600MB of RAM at idle with minimal stuff running. 1.5GB should get you by though.

    1.5 gb will be enough.

    oblivion at 1440 x 900 uses around 700 mb

vista uses around 600-700 mb. also background things.

1.5 gb is enough. If there are games that need more ram than oblivion then you are in trouble but most dont.

    Crysis will though I bet

Officially I think it is 2GB. However some laptops have chipsets on them that can hold 4GB. Research your chipset and see if it may be possible. It can still be limited at the bios level however. My E1705 supposedly has a chipset that can go up to 4GB so I may give it a shot but Dell only supports up to 2GB for it.
