1.6 vs 1.8 ghz

Ok guys I know im shopping at the bottom of r the barrel with these chips but here is my question. I like computers. I use them a lot. But I don't game much anymore, atleast not on my computer. But I do want fast boot up, program to open quickly, and beable to run vista with out bogging down.

Everything else being the same is there really a noticable difference between the speeds of the 1.6 and the 1.8 ghz both 800 fsb and 2 mb cach. The price difference on the laptop im pricing is $120 which is over 10% of the total cost...is it worth it?

 

No. Think about it. It's only 13% faster. If something was lagging, would pay $120 for it to lag only a teeny bit less?

a 7200RPM harddrive is much more important for faster boot up and load ups than the CPU
my laptop with a 5400rpm HD takes 1.5-2 minutes to load up Vista Home Premium completely, on the other hand my desktop takes 30-40 seconds to load up Vista Ultimate completely with a stupid dreamscene playing in the background too. My laptop's TL-60 should be better than my desktop's Pentium D 820 CPU, so HD RPM is much more important.

 

I'm currently running on a Core 2 Duo L7500 Low Voltage chip - it has the 1.6GHz clockspeed and 800MHz FSB like the machines you are looking at except mine has a 4MB L2. I like fast computers and the L7500 passes my performance tests with flying colors. Spend the money on a faster hard drive or more RAM to get the most noticeable performance increases.

 

Done. I just dropped my 1.8 and got the 1.6.

Not to piggy back on my own thread but the best I can find for 2 gigs of ram is right around $75 + shipping. anyone beat that?

i suggest you upgrade the ram later, see how 1gb feels first, I didn't notice any performance increase going from 1gb ot 2gb.

You'll definitely notice a difference going from 1GB --> 2GB in Vista. Vista takes almost 800MB by itself, plus whatever else you have installed. Right now I have 1.2GB of memory usage just surfing the Internet and listening to music.

 

for me i noticed vista uses 30% of your RAM no matter how much you have, when i went from 1gb to 2gb vista still idled at 30% ram use.

 

Yes well the more RAM you have the more the OS will wanna use up. it takes that much so it wont have to worry about running out of RAM if u use things like games and such which take huge amounts.
