I'm trying to keep the price down on my laptop as much as possible. But I still want it to be a fast performer. I'm only using my laptop for usual stuff like internet, word processing, music, internet video, etc.

Should I get the 1.83 processor for $60 more or will the 1.66 processor be plenty fast for my needs for at least 5 years into the future?

1.66 should be all you need. Mine doesn't even go pass 1Ghz when doing all those stuff you mentioned.

Well for the tasks you listed a 1.66 ghz processor will suffice and even if u do get the 1.83 you won't really notice the difference. Unless by internet video you meant encoding it etc., which would show a slight difference, but minimal.

Yeah, I had to face the same decision and just ordered the 1.66. I will only be using it for the stuff you mentioned, and everybody told me I would be fine with it.

You won't see a difference between the T2300E (1.66) and T2400 (1.83) processors as stated. I don't know what laptop you're buying, but you are best off getting 1GB of RAM - that will help more than the processor upgrade will.

a 1.66 dual core should be more than enough for your needs.

Heavy video encoding? I would mention games but in all but the rarest cases its the GPU that is the bottleneck in modern games, so a 1.66ghz Core duo should manage just fine.

so youre saying if i upgraded to 1.83 (or even 2 ghz as i was originally going to) then i would be just wasting a bunch of money? there's absolutely no benefit to be had from a 1.83 ghz upgrade if i just use the computer for normal use? (movies, music, net, ms office, simple matlab programming)

im just having a lot of trouble settling for the lowest processor (yes i realize it's dual core and it's better than i think), i just dont like having the weakest piece of hardware. :)

actually you would acutally be setteling for the slowest peice of the BEST hardware. you can still go and find pentium 4's and celerons in notebooks. Core Solo and Core Duo is the best that intel offers at this time.
