What's a good 100gig 7200rpm hd? are there any out there at 10,000 rpm, or is that still not available for notebooks yet?
-
No there arnt any 10k notebook harddrives yet, but there may be someday. They're still not too common on desktops yet ether. I dont know good brands, but im sure some people do. Or you could go onto newegg and look at some of the reviews.

This is speculation, but it is rumored that solid state drives (to be released in a year or two) will have at least a sustained transfer rate of 60 MB/s, which is around the performance of the original 36 GB WD Raptor drive. -
550 for 36 gigs...yikes, not ready to shell out that kind of money for improved performance...haha. thanks for the link krispy

is a sata drive replacable with a parallel ata drive? i read somewhere that sata maintained backward compatibility with aprallel atas. is that correct?
-
No, Sata is not backward compatibility with ata. Both of them has different connectors.
JC -
so if the original hd in my noteobook was a sata i would have to purchase another sata drive inorder for it to work?
-
correct yes, according to benchmarks and people's reviews around here your top 2 choices are the Hitachi Travelstar 7k100 100gb 7200rpm harddrive or the Seagate Momentus 7200.1 both can typically be found for around 175-180

yea i think im gonna get the hitachi and make my current hd into an external. thanks for the help guys.
-
What about putting a Raptor drive in a 3.5" enclosure? Would that work?
-
-
if i used a 3.5 drive wouldnt i also need an external powersource for the drive? I think if its 2.5 it can just run off of the notebook without an external.
-
Yes, the external 3.5 drives needs to have AC adapter to operate.
JC -
yea that's what I thought. Plus I'm not intersted in getting a specific external, I just need to do something with my current internal once I buy my new hd.
