Has anyone tried this? I remember reading something on it, but I can't find it anymore.

Not yet but there is a member here that is going to try it out in the coming months

The tricky part is going to be the hard limit of 330w on the whole system, dual PSU mods dont work IIRC. So ideally you would want 115w per GPU and 100-115w for the CPU which is tricky with the MSI 1070's as they operate around 130w and have been documented to work fine for daily operation at 185w.

On its face, the AW18 cant use 1070 SLI as those cards only work in eDP mode which the AW18 currently does not support (type of signal output to the LCD). The other issue is physical installation as the 1070's that support SLI also arent standard MXM 3.0b form factor cards.

The best configuration IIRC is 980m SLI or its possible that the lesser iterations of the 1070 might work but those dont have SLI connector.

If that members planned mod works then the AW18 will work with 1070's, but it will be far from a plug and play scenario

Interesting, I knew that that the MSI's weren't exactly plug and play with the R1's, but this is very interesting tbh.

If anything it's much easier with the R1 only because the laptop also has the eDP port. But your right that it still required some modding for physical installation.

So wait, another question, is it possible to use Pascal with a 60HZ M17 Ranger?

    Technically, yes.

Though this is only done with the Eurocom 1070 with the 60hz LVDS display and only in optimus mode.

Though the track record has been VERY spotty where the 1070 doesnt perform well or crashes in games and the like. I dont work for Eurocom so I cant say how many they sell versus the problems that have been reported in the Ranger sub-forum.

The card just doesnt work well it seems. Some are trying to figure out if LVDS support can be added to other cards, I think @woodzstack is one such individual. Though I may be mistaken, was half asleep when I was reading that thread.

So as a general rule, no, Pascal doesnt come with LVDS support traditionally. There are exceptions by third parties it seems but from what I have seen it doesnt seem to be a reliable choice.

I learn a trick or two every few weeks for this card, and yeah it's not 100% care free yet. Back in the day, neither was a 980M though in most aftermakret upgrades. However, it's past the part where it should have been made perfect - the downside is, not as many people using these as there are 3-4 different 1070's to choose from, and most brands have direct cards for thier own laptop , this 1070 is specifically not intended for any laptop in general. So support is MUCH harder.

Actually they work with LVDS, but did not initially with the MSI versions. Then we fixed that, and now all pascal's work better with Optimus, all of Pascal works in dedicated mode obviously, but sometimes like in the case of the EURO 1070, it's not been tested with different vbioses yet.

I plan to flash one when i get my hands on another, but tax season just hit me, so I have to pay my fee's and low on cash so I have not stocked any extra then what I suspect I will 100% need within 2 months. My best sellers are the 1060N this year MXM card wise, so i stock those. I also still sell more MSI 1070's then EURO 1070's.

In a month I will have some extra coin and if no customer takes one, I will take one for myself and test it by flashing it.

Pascal in dedicated mode with LVDS would probably garner a lot of attention as optimus introduces input lag in my experience even with the 780m in my own laptop. Going to dedicated was the first thing I did and fixed those issues instantly.

Still though, very interested in the other members mod for eDP support in the AW18, dont know how the BIOS will handle it but a dream machine for now would be the AW18 RX 480 w/ 965m physx driver.

yeah when we mod the drivers for Optimus, we have to consider adding these lines for support for Optimus, otherwise sometimes the games do not switch and use the right videocard.
