Is there any full HD monitor good for travel? Needs a cover, some sort of tricky stand and , I guess, USB power and also I guess DisplayLink. 1366 x 768 monitors are meh.

No? I would somewhat presume in this resolution-starved age such a thing would be 20 inch plus. No worries, I already carry enough that I always have a checked in 25" luggage and it could go in that, like if you'd carry a big album book which I just did :)

Best bet would be a 1080p LCD-TV, and use an USB adapter/converter for the signals from your laptop.

    cheers ...

Shuttle makes a 19" 1680x1050 monitor. It's meant for portability. But not the other things you mentioned. Only VGA input and requires external power.
Shuttle XPC | PC Made Modern

If you're talking USB powered, the highest resolution screen is 1024x600 10" that I've seen. Although with USB 3.0 hopefully they can improve on that, but I still don't think you'll get a 15" 1080p monitor that can run on USB power alone. Max for USB 3.0 is 4.5W. There is a larger USB 3.0 connector that will offer an additional 1000mA (5V), but I doubt laptops will ever use those connectors.

edit: I stand corrected. Here's this one: http://www.itproportal.com/2011/06/03/asus-shows-24-inch-led-usb-powered-monitor/
24" is a bit big for a travel monitor though and probably requires two USB plugs considering the 9W power consumption of the monitor (using USB 3.0)

I am not married to DisplayLink or USB power although an external power brick is just ugh. I have a proper laptop with digital and analog outputs (ie not a Mac).

1366 x 768 is available from Toshiba at a 14" size, from Samsung at a 18.5" size. I have definitely read that Asus news and that's what made me wonder -- is that the first?

As for the Shuttle, hat's at least 1680 x 1050 but good luck finding one actually being sold. I have seen one on amazon.de SHUTTLE 48.26cm TFT XP19 WSXGA: Amazon.de: Elektronik but at 204EUR I am not so sure :)

contrast ratio, response time, nits/brightness, all seem to be within the realm of current spec monitors.......

The brochure mentions a power adapter.

My only question would be what is the real/effective gamut and can it be effectively calibrated with the intended laptop igp/gpu.

You can always get a padded sleeve stitched up.

But at this price, if I needed one for a long-term stay or presentations, I'd buy it for delivery at the hotel and then ship it back home.
