I'm buying a 17 inch laptop and I'm wondering if I would notice any difference in boot up time and overall performance if I got the 120GB instead of the 250GB since the 250GB costs an extra £44.

Boot time? Possibly. But not significant unless your shutting down/booting up two dozen times a day or more.

Overall performance after a few weeks? Depends if you OP it or not and how full you keep the drive (after OP'ing; usable size for me is only ~163GB).

For £44 more, the increase in sustained performance over time is more than worth it.

I would never get a 120GB SSD, their performance is always much lower than the 256GB and above variants and you have less space for OP
For 44, I would definitely have gotten the 250GB version

I would personally suiggest the Sandisk Extreme Pro if you can afford it.. Its definetly worth the extra and gives some awesome performance... Also has a 10 year warranty....

The performance gap is negligible for the most recent generation of SSD though.

The 840 EVO is not the most recent generation of SSD. Check out the specs on the Samsung 850 Pro. 128GB SSD performance really catches up.

The 850 Pro is like 30-40% more expensive then the 840... I doubt it will be in the OP's budget... Best idea would be to get 250GB one.. I had a 128GB C300 SSD and now with my 240GB Scandisk, I can't think of having anything smaller...

The 256GB 850 PRO is even faster than the 1TB version....
